Baptiste Concerned About Perry Bay

Baptiste Concerned About Perry BayAntigua St. John's - Following a reported visit to the Perry Bay squatters community, minister with responsibility for Lands, Hilson Baptiste, has expressed concern about a potential outbreak of disease in the area.

As reported by the government broadcasting station, ABS, the minister is appalled by how human waste is disposed of in the area.

“I went down there myself to see, and I see the toilets... the drain, when you [use] the toilets it goes straight into the drain,” he said. “I see all the water that comes from the houses to the septic tanks goes straight to the drain.”

He added, “So it’s not just that you want to move them, it is a health hazard, and not only the Perry Bay people that would get sick, all of Gray’s Farm would get sick, so it’s dangerous.”

Concern for this unsanitary situation has prompted Minister Baptiste, along with other members of the Development Control Authority (DCA), which falls under his ministry, to urge the squatter community to move within a reasonable amount of time.

He further pledged the government’s assistance to help the squatters with their relocation efforts.

“We can assist them by getting APUA to move quickly with their power, and get a backhoe to go ahead and dig septic tanks and make sure that septic tanks are properly built. We will do that as a government,” the minister said. “We’ll assist them, and I am committed to that.”

He added that a backhoe has already been assigned to dig septic tanks and create drains.

Other than the fact that the area is not a documented community, the potential for an outbreak of cholera or any other disease has been a major issue, as is the potential for an island-wide epidemic.

Health officials have repeatedly expressed concern that an outbreak could prove detrimental to the country and its tourism product.

A long time before 2004 a certain politician asked me what job would I want if I was to be a part of the Government. I said, I WOULD LIKE TO BE THE CHIEF GARBAGE MAN. yep, at the time I was a VP for on the worlds largest banks and yet All I wanted to do was get Antigua clean and keep it that way. so if Newton was right about the Right People for the Strategic and I had that job. The bull dozer would have been at pPerry Bay years ago and certainly by last Friday. The government gave them more than enough time and don't need to say no more. I would have sent the police Friday just to find out who was still squatting make notes and head straight to court for an eviction permit. I would not greate a Chit whole in Cashew Hill. For those who are not born in ANU I would deport them and although Morris suggestion makes some sense, I would not use Tax payers money to fund free housing from free loaders. The government gave them more than enough time.

Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock! Friends, your words of wisdom to look to the unfilled inventory of housing stock will cover the land. With your Ideas, Newton's clarion call to find the Innovative Good against The Doom with Innovation and the Right People for the Strategic Do Tand has been answered.
Hopefully, comments on 16 Feb '13 will gain entrance & common cause with your Transformative Strategies & Tactical Plans: "Housing demand is a function of the growth in the number of independent households; the need to replace dwellings that are substandard... Housing supply by the Private Sector is related to market forces ... & expected profits. Governments may influence both housing demand & supply through measures such as subdivision control, building regulations, ... & direct incentives that encourage households to choose sustainable housing units".SIRMZP "Ottos & Ottos New Town with some help to improve infrastructure should be able to accommodate 75 Households quickly and would achieve the goal of mixed-use settlements. There are Housing Development Projects lying vacant and costing money. Could be another quick fix".
Go Well! Respect!

Brother B has no clue as to what he is doing. Brother B is one of the last breed of politicians cut from the old cloth. His counter part in Baldwin acknowledged this by appointing Mansoor a minister. People like Adams and Chandler are realizing they are not up to scratch to hold a ministerial position even though they won their seats. Politicians should be vetted for competency before they run as a representative. Gone are the days of likability and popularity. Substance and intelligence are important attributes to have when representing the people's business. Perry Bay situation is a fiasco. Feces flying in the face of Brother B and his DCA and they cannot smell the defication. This has nothing to do with being Hispanic. How could you allow this to be happening under your watch? This situation did not develop over night. This is a protracted systematic development over a number of years. Shame on you Brother B. Then again i understand your do nothing approach for you are cut from the old cloth.

You are saying the very same thing I've been saying, but, as you can see, some don't seem to like the suggestion. They have enough empty houses from all those do called low income housing projects that no one can afford. He can put four or five in a house and charge them rent.

Now you see the serious health conditions...do something!

#7 Dig It » 2013-02-22 18:08

I am glad the MP see the serious health conditions at Perry Bay.
If Brother B is really and truly concerned about the 'squatters' why don't he put them in affordable housing, instead of "relocating" them to another area that we may well have the same "health hazard." At least the MP has not filled all the vacancies at Follies and North Sound housing schemes. Until the squatters move in next door to some of the politicians, they will never understand what residents are going through, as they themselves are not at any health risks.

This is a serious issue which I am surprised that persons are not agitating more for it to be resolved. Reasonable time has passed and have been stated before the last thing we need is a cholera outbreak because this will result in other countries advising there citizens from travelling to Antigua, and everybody will be affected. Why are we allowing these illegals to be putting all of our livelihood at risk for soo many years??? Government pass and present have allowed this situation to carry on for too long. Fix it now or if they have no where to live send them back to Santo Doming

Thanks for coming to the rescue and your suggestion Mr. Johnnie-come-la ter. It is nothing new or different from what Chaku or any other official said already. ANU is only 108 square miles and can be explored in less than a half day's drive' yet it has taken some of these officials years to realize this disease laden cesspool in the heart of ST. John's exist. Mr. Baptiste, perhaps you should have recommended moving the into those unoccupied unaffordable housing projects you commissioned.

#2 Crazed and bemused » 2013-02-22 06:51

The time to act was when the first structure was built years ago. All we get now is a lot of talk with no result. I imagine the day will come when Antigua is dotted with squatters, as they've now discovered they can live free for years on government land.

That was the only way to know first hand what the situation really looks like. I am glad you did that but why do we take so long to do thing that obvious need immediate attention? My concern is that we are creating another Perry Bay somewhere else and this time it will be more permanent than the original but not better. These people need to disburse. We should nt be creating a Ghetto for them. Why should they live free on the Tax payers dime. Why can they not help themselves? The bull dozers should be clearing Perry Bay today.
