Government Facilitates Home Security Upgrades

zuoda.net photoAntigua St. John's - Private residents have been given the all clear to import CCTV surveillance equipment and burglar bars for their residence, following a recent Cabinet decision that lifts all duties and fees on the importation of such items.

National Security Minister Hon. Dr. Errol Cort announced this as he brought the media up to speed with the developments in the area of crime detection and prevention recently.

“Government has agreed to grant duty free importation of CCTV equipment and burglar alarms for security on private homes,” the Minister said.

He urged that the general public take advantage of the provisions and employ additional security measures on their homes.
“We will continue to use all public resources to ensure the protection of citizenry and visitors to the country,” Dr. Cort said.

Further, he pointed out that considering the sensitivity of security procedures, he could not go into too many details on the security measures to come in the weeks ahead, but he has nonetheless expressed his complete confidence in the briefings he has received from top security officials.

“Based on my personal briefings, the next 30 to 60 days will undoubtedly reap benefits,” the Minister said.

Over the past several weeks the police have collaborated with the defense force personnel in a series of targeted searches and raids throughout the country.

Police spokesperson Inspector William Holder said recently that lawmen have been battling at least one gun related crime per week.

Homeowners have not been spared, with burglaries and break-ins appearing to have also increased.

In the five and a half weeks since the crime taskforce was established it has been reported to have recovered two illegal firearms, executed 43 search warrants and 71 targeted-patrols and detained some 72 people.

One step in the right direction #2

But you can put conditions in place and make sure the handgun is of a certain caliber only. But at least let people feel they can do something against these hard criminals that are terrorizing our homes these days. This would create a more vibrant industry in the security and protection business. Things like mace should be sold and most women need to have this in their handbag. Electric stun guns and tasers should be part of most people’s defends. Just free up the market and let people who want to and can afford it protect themselves. And the police should lead in this area to ensure they have a good idea who has what.

One step in the right direction #1

One of the rules in economics is, if the Government wants to stimulate anything it needs to remove all the obstacles on the way. We have seen that when they did the Xmas week shopping and lower the ABST and now they are going to try removing the taxes from the security related items. Well why not make it permanent and make that industry zero rated. Cause the services of the security monitoring companies are taxable. Therefore I suggest you make these services zero rated. In my last comment on this issue I said if the police cannot protect the citizens they must allow the citizens to protect themselves. So in that case we should regulate a more aggressive gun ownership in this country. Don’t make the mistake like in the US to give it to each and every one.

Why exactly does Samantha Marshall deserve kudos for recently asking for the same thing that many bloggers and ordinary citizens have been demanding for months?

Do you really believe that the mimicry that comes out of a politicians mouth is more important than the original ideas of brilliant and ordinary Antiguans?

Crime fighting is 365 days, not 30 to 60!

#4 Dig It » 2013-02-16 09:35

If we are going to fight crime, let's protect all private citizens and visitors and not just those that can afford to buy "security systems" and get 'duty free.' What about those residents in 'high-risk-comm unities' that is under constant 'gun-related crimes' and violence? Why hasn't the NS Minister put his 'big-fat-chat' where it is, and help these communities with 24-Hour "surveillance-e quipment" in strategic points to curb/stop the crimes?
Quote:
“Based on my personal briefings, the next 30 to 60 days will undoubtedly reap benefits,” the Minister said.
Why is the good doctor thinking "short-term" as 'crime fighting' is a 365 days job?

Kudos To Samantha Marshall

#3 WATCHFUL » 2013-02-16 09:13

Samantha Marshall ought to be given some kudos here. She had the guts to call out the government and although this is not a panacea to the escalating crime, it s a welcome start.
Samantha, keep at it. They hear your voice.

Kudos

#2 tenman » 2013-02-16 07:52

Kudos to the government on this measure though details seem lacking. Does this waiver include ABST and revenue recovery charge, which constitute some 25%? The article says "Cabinet decision that lifts all duties and fees" but the quote from Cort says duty (think its 15%). I would like to suggest that the government partner with the private sector or some other friendly nation, in an effort to help those who cannot afford such systems in a similar method to the cuban energy saving bulb initiative. The question then remains, when those alarms go off, will the police, sometimes with a station a mere two blocks away, still be tardy, claiming transportation problems?

Setting the expectations

#1 skyewill » 2013-02-16 05:13

Once again our National Security has set big expectations. He has done this over and over with nothing but failure after failure after failure. I DO NOT AGREE WITH THIS MANAGEMENT STYLE! I am reminded of the JM family motto: (owners of the largest Lexus dealership in the South) "UNDER PROMISE, OVER DELIVER” many management experts label it as EXCEEDING THE EXPECTATIONS." Over the past few months we heard they were doing such a big job only to net a half a gun and a pea shooter when we know very well some real big guns out there. “Based on my personal briefings, the next 30 to 60 days will undoubtedly reap benefits,” the Minister said. (Crystal Ball or Conspiracy?)
My Advice for those with zero cool credits: "Don't just tell the world and show the world."
