Cabinet Honors Winston Derrick with Official Funeral

Winston Derrick Antigua St. John's - Cabinet at its weekly session on Tuesday 5th February decided that Chairman of Observer Publications Limited Winston A. Derrick would be accorded an Official Funeral.

Cabinet expressed its sympathy to his wife Mrs. Kim Warman-Derrick, children Diane, Winston Jr., Sunny Derrick-Goddard and Georgia and the extended family and noted his sterling service in the field of tourism as a hotel and restaurant owner and operator and in journalism as newspaper editor and radio station owner and operator.

Cabinet also acknowledged his invaluable contribution to the development of press freedom in Antigua and Barbuda.

“For over 25 years Mr. Winston Derrick served Antigua and Barbuda with distinction.

He was a businessman of strong character and a distinguished son of Antigua and Barbuda who was always concerned about the welfare of others. His passion for freedom of expression resulted in the freeing up of the media in Antigua and Barbuda and the establishment of over a dozen private media establishments.

His love for journalism was evident as he dedicated a large portion of his career and energies in providing an avenue for young aspiring journalists to develop their skills.

He will be greatly missed by the people of this nation whom he committed his life to serving”

Cabinet has appointed Acting Minister of Education, Youth, Sports and Gender Affairs, Winston Williams as Chair of the Official Funeral Planning Committee.

The Committee, along with Mrs. Kim Warman-Derrick, will hold its first meeting on Thursday 7th February.

What the hell is wrong with you people? Do you not know that an OFFICIAL funeral is different from a STATE funeral? Papa Bird got a STATE FUNERAL, winston is getting an OFFICIAL FUNERAL? How can you say therefore that UPP is putting Winston in same category as Papa Bird. Gimme a god damn break.

At the end of life, what matters is not the accolades and accomplishments , but our eternal destiny. What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul? R.I.P Winston!

Bjam don't forget he help UPP rise to power. You forget the tape that made the rounds around the world with the former PM and the young girl just before the 2004 election, and shown all over the country. Remember some Minister's of Government run with it like hot bread and **er.

What amazing set of people. SMH.So the late VC and Derrick is now supposed to be on the same page in terms of contribution right? Is that what i am really understanding here?? All me can do a shake me head, because antigua people haffu hab some kind a **ation sickness, hope it is not the brown water that you all are drinking. I really dont give a rats end who gets state or official funeral,in the end only one thing matters, but for some to try to equate the two, Gosh,GIVE-ME- A -DAM-BRAKE.Why not give everyone that supports the Upp either a state or official funeral,i think that would be ideal.

Can anything be done without being political

#6 Honesty » 2013-02-07 11:14

My condolences to the Derricks family. I wonder sometimes if our people really understands or tries to think for themselves. We call ourselves a christian minded community and yet the politics of the day and the politrickcian is first preference in their lives. Wasn't the late Hon.V.C Bird given a state funeral? Who it was that brought the real freedom of speech in Antigua via the media? Was it not on the 9th of December we celebrate National Heroes Day? Isn't the late V C Bird included? Who is buried in heroes park? Whose monument is at the Public Market square? The library has lots of information on V C Bird put together by locals and international. It's black history month and i can assure you that if you visit you will see his photo on display.

Even the death of someone becomes political in this country.

RIP Mr. Derrick. You did your country great service while you were alive. Condolences to all family and friends of this great man. However, it would seem that he lived a very productive life. He may be gone, but his memories will live on.

All Papa did was replace one form of slavery with another, mental slavery. For years antiguan's were brainwashed by Papa & the other Birds that followed, you had to follow the party line, what the Bird says go so. Winston fought against that doctrine and fought for freedom from that mental slavery which was so destructive. In that regard he has done more for Antigua, more for democracy & democratic thought, more for individual freedoms than ANYONE else in Antigua's history. Because of that, in my opinion, an Official Funeral is not good enough, he should be givena State Funeral with all the trappings and internment in Heroes Park, because by god he's a bigger hero than that xxxx that's buried there now.

I'm glad that Mr. Derrick will be laid to rest in this way. HE DESERVES IT. I will continue to keep his family and the Observer Family in my Prayers in this trying time. WITH GOD, ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE.
