APUA Update on Island Wide Power Outage

APUA Update Antigua St. John's - The Antigua Public Utilities Authority would like to provide an update as to the circumstances surrounding the island-wide outage experienced on the evening of Friday 1st February 2013 and its impact:

At approximately 7:30 pm, a section of the 69 KV transmission line failed, causing an island-wide shut down of the electrical grid.

The line is proximate to the Crabbs Substation. On discovery of the fault, the affected section was isolated and the Electricity Business Unit commenced re-energizing the system.

This process returned power within 30 minutes to some consumers, and the entire system was restored within 1 hour and 30 minutes.

APUA service crews have already commenced repairing the lines; however to execute this work, the Crabbs substation will have to be taken off line; this will affect the power supply to business located at the Crabbs Peninsula.

This will also affect the Water Business Unit’s pumping operation at Crabbs, which currently provides 60% of the island’s water supply. As a result consumers in the following areas will be affected:

Parham, Fitches Creek, Piggotts, Potters, Cassada Gardens, Sutherlands, Dry Hill, Upper & Lower Gambles

Fort Road, Mount Pleasant, Anchorage Road, McKinnon’s, Cedar Grove, Hodges Bayand Coolidge.

Water service to these areas should be restored by 6:00 pm this evening.

The Authority apologises for any inconvenience caused.

skyewill & Jane the currency risk issue is something they should have handled. I recall when this was put to the ambassador he acted like a fish out of water. It is this same government who criticized the former government for making the same mistake with the Italian loan. Part of criticism, involves learning from mistakes

Inconvenience Caused...Too Many!

#11 Dig It » 2013-02-03 10:27

How many 'apologises' will APUA tell its consumers before they get their act together? They have done more 'apologising' than "fixing" this continuous "island-wide shut down of the electrical grid," which leads to the shut down of our "water supply." Both management and board, without a doubt, should be "fired." They have been trying to figure out what's causing the failures of the "transmission" problem at Crabbs for far too long. In 2011, APUA's Communication Officer, Ms. Samuel saidQuote:
“Our Engineers are still trouble shooting to diagnose the exact cause of the system failure,” said APUA Corporate Communications Officer, Cathrona Samuel.
Samuel also added “That service could be fully restored between 6 and 10:30 tonight (yesterday) because water now has to be pumped to the different holding tanks around the island”.

My friends, do you see the 'pattern' of "excuses-after- excuses?" When will this stop?

#9 Justin.SMA » 2013-02-03 09:04

The PM should deploy the Great Negoiator!!!!!! !!!!! to get the Chinese to upgrade the Trasmission line..
That was APUA's REQUEST ; not an old outdated 47m chinese generator ,which keep TRIPPING THE 69KVA.
Apua 's Electricity Manager Lydon Francis lost his Job because of that professional recommendation. ....

An "explanation" but no apology. Management at Apua and board members should be fired asap. Tht apology is no excuse and now water is being affected....... .. Apua need to change their motto "providing life's necessities". Ur only providing stress, broken elec appliances, dirty water, higher bills every month and disconnections. ....... #disgraceful service

We paid 47 Million and we can’t get light and now we now the water is also not only brown when it comes out but we don’t even get the dirty water. According to John Maginley , EVERYBODY IN ANTIGUA LOVE THEIR LIGHTS CUT OFF as he though his full support for dark nights without baths.

We have grown tired of the same old thing. it doesn't really matter what they say what the reason was. The point is they are not able to provide a dependable service to the people. Yet they will cut you off promptly if you are a motnh or three behind with your payment. What needs to happen is either allow persons to provide their own electricity when they want to. And don't tell us to be dependent on them when we cannot be. It is unjust and unfair. This is state terrotsim.

APUA is only necessary for life.If your life does not depend on it.I have lived in the states of New Jersey,Californ ia,Colorado,Ohi o and Massachusetts.I can count on one hand the amount of times the utilities went out. Some of the outages were planned. They would notify you in the mail of such.Antiguans need to withhold paying their bills for a month to send a real message to APUA.That they mean business and will not take it no more.New power plant same old crap.

Why Has No One Paid Attention To The HV Transmission Lines!

#2 John French II » 2013-02-02 19:14

Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock! Since the Questions have been raised on the WPP, this mere voice in the wilderness has been raising questions about and encouraging actions on the The High Voltage Transmission Lines.
To be forewarned is to be forearmed.
Why should this failure have taken place?
This commenter has addressed the High Voltage Transmission Lines redesign, engineering, operations and maintenance in several notes through this news portal and discussions with some with access to the Powers That Be, yet it is business as usual.
The State Of Planning Is woefully Deficient. Nuff Said!
Oh Gad! Pray Fuh Mi Picknees!
