Really good to be home to be part of the history to hear and experience the liberation Winston and his brother fought for, for the nation;s right to independent free speach. Voice of the people speaks volumes and it's so good to hear the people participating and sharing their views. The Derricks were a great inspiration and example to the nation. Stand firm in your belief, love gives good character, be honest and true to yourself. To the end this was what Winston was all about. He lived life to the full not knowing when he would be called and when he was he did not linger. To the family I am deeply sad for your loss but his works lives on and we are truly greatful for his life;#'s work and contribution here in Antigua. Winston left a legacy with us all.

To the Derrick family, the management and staff of The Observer I extend my deepest condolences. Antigua has lost a passionate voice of the people. Whether you agreed with his opinion or not, Winston always spoke truth to power. And he was not afraid to offer consructive criticism equally to both the party he supported and its opposition. May he rest in peace. His will be very BIG shoes to fill.

#65 Derek Barrett » 2013-02-03 14:26

Winston Derrick
Was a man

Who launched
A communications
Master plan

Antigua was a place
Of sea and sun

He flicked a switch
And the talk begun

Larger than life
Full of swagger

With every topic
And with his grammar

He fielded calls
From far and wide

Always sharp
Until he died

But his story
Is far
from done

As with
this foundation
It has just begun

When we gather
For him beneath
That steeple

We will still tune in
To the Voice of the people.

As Dr.Martin Luther King Jr.once said (and I'm paraphrasing here) it isn't how long we live that matters,it's the content of character and of what one has been able to achieve during the course one's lifetime ,that truly counts.

Winston (the not so Fooley Boy from Ovals) Derrick, was a giant of a man as it relates to the many contributions he made, over the years,to his people and his country, and it is most heartwarming to witness the many acolades that are being made, apecifical ly those by Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer,
regarding the work of Mr.Derrick.

Winston had an enormous sense of of humour (mostly self-depreciating)
which played a role as to why so many people gravitated toward him,his ideas and endeavours.Alwa ys gracious and never wanting to appear better than others. He knew who he was and from whence he came.Winston was,as they say, most 'comfortable in his skin'.

The people of Antigua and Barbuda will forever remember (and miss) 'The
Voice Of The People' .......Winston Derrick.

Sincere condolences to the Derrick family.

Sometimes we have to wonder why people like Winston has to die so young. Although sad, the positive thought to it is that perhaps he was placed on this earth for a purpose. Such purpose has being accomplished and hence his mission was completed. Of course, it hard to accept that man like him had to go so soon. He certainly will be remembered, not only for his resilience and fortitude towards changing the freedom of press here in Antigua, but he was a man who says it as he sees it. May his soul RIP, and may there be comfort to his family and friends! Certainly, a great son of the soil is gone.

To be honest, Winston began to move back to the middle of investigative journalism. I pray that his life's work continues to grow like a flower garden of love for a pro-democracy culture. The open society that Antigua and Barbuda has become should inspire us to be honest about the best path to nation-building ! None of us can ever dismiss Winston’s superlative contributions! We honor him by practicing his legacy of penetrating influence and visionary power!

I am saddened by the sudden departure of Winston Derrick. When the Observer News Media opened several years ago, I had the privilege of providing advisory to the founder. I also had the honor of working with Winston during those precious days of hope when the UPP was seen as the only vehicle for radical change and national advancement! In force, passion, and determination Winston represents the ideals of a free press. The Derrick family provided ready access to all to voice their opinions, for or against the status quo. He also put great emphasis on critical thinking, hard-hitting questions, and uncomfortable probing for the truth.

He was such a refreshing voice to radio. Straight forward, clear and to the point. The first time i heard him was when he had just started out on the radio. He was commenting about a woman purse that was stolen. Are you carry back the woman pus. Are you too damn thief. The woman want she pus with she money back. i turned to my friend and asked who is that person. My friend stated that is Winston Derrick. I never met the man personally, but i feel as if i knew him personally. He had a way of be friending you on the radio. My wife love him to death. We have lost a giant, a trail blazzer, a pioneer, a visionary, a man with a sophisticated common touch. A man who touched so many of us. He would now be known as the voice of heaven.

Growing up at Ovals there was something special as a community. The Derricks lived on the first street. I am a few years older than Winston his uncle's house was almost in back of my family's home. I saw Winston almost every day. I left ovals in my early teens and lost contact until I was young adult, I ran into Winston at his place on Fort Road (cockle shell) we immediately began reminisce on our youth since then we always addressed each other as you boy from ovals.
I lived in Antigua for three years and came to respect and admire the man for his courage. To stand up for principle and his belief in free enterprise. Antigua has surely lost another of its giants.

Legacy

#8 Clarence E Pilgrim » 2013-02-02 07:48

It is true that very few persons can claim to have a dramtic impact on the Social landscape of a country, like the late Mr Wiinston Derrick and his media group. He has been a tremendous pioneer in the evolution of the media sector in Antigua & Barbuda, and will be remembered for the innovative and dynamic way he taylored the management of a number of his media group's programs. He is a true and successful son of the soil, whose achievements leaves a legacy that will be remembered! May God bless his soul and my sincere condolences to his family and friends! He will be greatly missed.

He has played a powerful role in the media landscape of Antigua and Barbuda. Fearless, strong, independent and a champion for what is right!

He faced many challenges for defending his right to speak and allow others to speak "what was on their mind"!

Like his brother Fergie before him, he will be greatly missed!

RIP dear friend of the "people"! The "fooley boy" from Ottos will remain part of our culture!

Your friend...!
