Barbudans Demand Meeting With Cabinet

Barbudans DemandAntigua St. John’s - Former Barbuda Senator Lynton Thomas said residents on the sister isle remain agitated about the proposed $100 million Gravenor Bay project and are demanding an immediate meeting with Cabinet.

The call comes a day ahead of a scheduled follow-up meeting between Cabinet and Barbuda Council members who are proponents of the project.

“If you can listen to a few, you can listen to the people and this is what we are demanding and demanding it immediately that the Cabinet comes to Barbuda to listen to the grievances of the people regarding the project.

“There would be a lot of things revealed,” Thomas said.

“Cabinet in my opinion is showing weakness. They have given conditions and that is what it is. Cabinet should not entertain no one else but the people regarding that project.”

Thomas and others on Barbuda have been opposed to the project from the onset, stating the investor does not have the financial backing to deliver it.

Cabinet had set pre-conditions before it could approve the resort development including that US $5 million be put in escrow.

But with the investor failing to meet the one week deadline for this to be done, a seven-member committee from the council was formed to make a case for the project to Cabinet.

“The people are very upset about it,” Thomas said heatedly. “The majority of the people are totally against the project.

They are saying that it is a conflict of interest for council member Arthur Nibbs and others to be siding with the investor.”

The former legislator has also been spearheading a petition for authorities to re-open the 230-plus-acre K Club and the 90-acre Beach House properties.

He has received more than 400 signatures to date and expects to meet the 500 target by Monday.

Thomas is now hoping a village meeting would be held on Saturday to discuss the petition and a resolution he wants to put to members of the Barbuda Council, the Cabinet and the governor general.

“The village meeting will be called for the people to make a resolution to forward the petition to the council and the government. I want the meeting to be held so that the representative and the council would be on island,” he said.

Thomas said suggestions can be emailed to him at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

Tell them that matter!

#21 Birdie » 2012-09-17 04:51

Beanie Man, maybe you're a bit too optimistic? It may be that 'them that matter' know, but we must all tell them about these things to make sure they know, and more important, to make sure they know we know they know. :-*

Yes, them that matter know

#20 Beanie Man » 2012-09-15 18:44

'Scam Detector' - the word is out, but still we must be vigilant. These Comments get index by search engines, the word seeps through the Net and maybe those that matter hear. But I think they heard already, I believe some good citizens have tell them how it is. Those that matter often blinded by $s promised for the country when we have such need, but some facts pull them back to reality. The bond/deposit set by Cabinet say to me 'we heard the news - this thing is not happening'.

Mystery is, why the Barbuda councilmen so set on this project despite it all. So far we hear no suggestion of sweeteners, backsheesh, commission, whatever you call it. So maybe everything is right and legal, or maybe them who know keep they head down so far - I don't know

Scary!

Do those that matter bother to read these good comments?

Does anyone send these comments to those that matter at the Gov?

Believe me, these so called 'developers' will find a way of covering their tracks and some fool at the Gov will believe them, like a "promise" or 'finance guarantee' that they do have the money or that they 'will' have the money (probably after they sold the idea to some dodgy investor from a country in who's interest it is to 'invest' for economic citizenship, like e.g. Chinese who will then take it over). PEOPLE DO NOT FALL FOR IT!
These people do not develop for the good of the community - they 'develop' and scheme for GREED.

The highest point on Barbuda is something like 146ft, according to Wikipedia, most is much lower. Some superyacht masts are 300 ft high, and typically they have lights all the way up. So, they will be exposed to heavy winds even in the proposed marinas when storms hit, and the rest of the time their mast lights would be visible from most of the island. The reefs of Barbuda are not at all easy to navigate - someone will fail to do so at some tie, and spread diesel oil all over the marine environment.

Next, what sewage and garbage disposal facilities are there on Barbuda, for 1,000 acres of development, 2 marinas, a 5* hotel, golf club. etc.? What laundries, bakeries, butchers, fishmongers, groceries, golf cart repair, etc., facilities are there? Oh, so they'll bring their own supplies? So what, I ask you, is the advantage for Barbudans?

This proposal hasn't been thought through.

The Truth

It's so obvious

#16 Birdie » 2012-09-12 04:24

This should be ringing alarm bells loud and clear. We have a company with no previous development history and no declared adequate source of finance proposing to build a 1,000 acre resort, and it looks like they hope to shift property by selling passports with it. Buyers then travel the world with their A & B passport, carrying out whatever business your previous passport is a bit awkward for, or using it to not pay tax in their home country. So the A & B passport gets a bad name, and honest A & B citizens have a hard time entering countries in North America and Europe (this is already happening with other 'economic citizenship' passports).

Why would anyone support that? It seems like these guys are running rings round both the Barbuda Council and the A & B Cabinet - maybe what they're planning is hard to see on the ground where the $ signs are flashing in front of people's eyes, but it's so obvious from the outside.

Please guys, remember Stanford, and wake up before it's too late, otherwise one day you'll find they own you lock stock and barrel!

#15 The Truth » 2012-09-12 00:51

Bu-Yard Yout, wah mek yuh ah act so? $$$$? man disrespec Bu-yard Act an dem sell out, but Bu Yard vote nah go so... reason...til fact explane ina Bu-Yard speekeny...over stan... council oblige (Bu-yard Act seh so). If you don't understand get a lawyer to explain. TO BE CRYSTAL CLEAR - READ ALL THE ACT PROPERLY - NOT JUST THE PARTS THAT SUIT and know this - A letter from council to cabinet misrepresenting the people will not railroad the people. Should Cabinet fail in their duty to protect the land vested in them on behalf of the people (a chupid move), then there is the next step (read the act again) ie bring it back to Barbuda for majority vote and lets count the 'few objectors' The objectors to Real Estate for sale on Barbuda in exchange for Economic Citizenship, to land given away to speculators hoping to sell lease on the land, to (ECONOMICCITIZE NSHIPBARBUDA.CO M) registered to ax x. It is NOT going to happen as that political grenade would be the death of the ANU EC investment Program, I think Cabinet can read that one. Thx to 'Concerned Citizen' for that.

Captive Labor

#13 Philip » 2012-09-11 16:08

Think about it, people - if this project build, the Barbudan people will be captive labor - one small island, one big business. Watch your mouth all day, minimum wage, rich men's crumbs, maybe even the company store. WHY WHY WHY is that a good idea for Barbuda?

We Inform, not misinform

#11 VoiceofReason » 2012-09-11 12:55

From what I've read so far, those against this development have been informing rather than mid-informing.

Once the bulldozers arrive, there will be no turning back, and Barbuda will be changed for ever. If you really want Codrington to change into a construction camp for years, with uncertain medium to long term prospects, go for it. If you want to live in a permanent dust storm with the noise of heavy plant, machinery, and trucks every day, go for it. If you want a company with no experience and a dubious background to lease your island long term, make a fortune then send the profits abroad, rule you like kings for a few years then leave their construction to dominate your island forever after, go for it. Sure, some of us commenting are not Barbudans - but we've seen this stuff happen before elsewhere, and we know this particular project just isn't right (and it smells funny).

Please remember, Barbudans will have have just one chance to get a big development right (if such a development can ever be right for Barbuda) - and this isn't it!

facts of the Discussion

#10 Bu-Yard Youth » 2012-09-11 11:15

In The 2007 Barbuda Land Act, in order for a major developmet to occur on Barbuda the following three steps have to be taken. Firstly, the members of the Barbuda council must agree to the proposal by vote.(which was done & passed by the House). Secondly, the People of Barbuda have to give consent and they did by voting(Signatur es where recored by the Chairman's Secretary). Which leaves us where we are currently which is the Approval of the Cabinet of Antigua & Barbuda.
However, they are a few persons on Barbuda who wish to see Barbuda remain as is so its in their interest to mis-inform the m** about this project in a effort to discredit it

Revelations, eh?

#9 Wadadlileaks » 2012-09-11 09:51

Lynton Thomas mentions 'revelations' , and we have two very interesting statements below:

1) 'The Truth' says Council reportedly told Cabinet that this project was agreed by the people, when it wasn't, and...

2) 'concerned citizen' points out that the legal requirement for leases of land in Barbuda is that major developments require the consent of THE MAJORITY OF THE PEOPLE OF BARBUDA - that's a pretty high bar to get over.

OK, so exactly why would Council support such an obviously dodgy development, with or without this prior consent? Have there been any suggestions of 'inducements' , 'commissions', call it what you like, for official support of this project?

Buy a passport with your house

#8 Taff » 2012-09-11 05:42

Developers xxxx are reputedly some of those behind the current push to sell Antigua & Barbuda passports. If they need to sell a passport with a house, what does that say about the quality of these potential new Barbudans, or the desirability of the development?

So where's '$100M' from?

#7 Dave » 2012-09-11 05:20

We heard a lot about '$100M' - where did that come from, an SSL press release by any chance? Sounds like a figure pulled out of the air to impress people, not any kind of genuine estimate of the cost of development. Does that suggest a company that really intends to build anything? This developer is so inept and devious that relations with existing homeowners at Jolly Harbour broke down almost as soon as their latest proposals there became public. Don't they follow the rules? because it appears they think they're above them. They would set Barbudans against each other for their own purposes - don't let them near your island!

pure rubbish

#5 concerned citizen » 2012-09-10 21:44

Let me get this straight. They couldn't come up with a mere 5% of the proposed $100M? This should have raised a red flag to begin with. The council should have shut it down from when they said they were not going to pay the retainer. Council, you are operating from a position of weakness and these guys can smell it, and the People of Barbuda can smell it as well. In the end you will get taken advantage of. Don't operate this deal as if you were playing a game of monopoly. This is for real. The People have a voice and you should listen to their voice. Don't let me break out the Barbuda Land Act on you...
6. Leases of land for major developments
(1) The Council, with the approval and on the advice of Cabinet and having obtained the consent of a majority of the people of Barbuda, may grant leases of land for major developments in accordance with this section and Part VI.

People of Barbuda, do not let a select few mash it up for everyone. Become aware, and get involved. I applaud Mr. Lynton for his efforts. Think this through cautiously. Why rush into this? How can the council even accommodate such rubbish!!!

TW - OK , so you missed the infamous meeting, perhaps not by accident, now please wake up, stop shirking your responsibilitie s and do your Job, inform and represent the people regarding this SSL and the due dilligence. Even you must understand there can be only one outcome to this nonsense, we need to end it NOW before it goes too far, so we can move on with some real progress for Barbuda. We are ready, the people are ready - please stop playing and DO SOMETHING that is RIGHT for ALL the people ..........

The Council represents Barrett , not the People

#3 The Truth » 2012-09-10 17:51

Maybe the message is getting thru. The council represents Barrett, it does not represent the people of Barbuda. The project was NOT agreed by the people, but council reportedly sent a letter to cabinet saying it was, just think about that..How dare they....where is the video of the meeting?....cou ncil is trying everything possible to force a development on the people that we do not want, there are serious alternatives which hardly get a mention because council pushing this SSL rubbish. There must be no sale of Barbuda land, no lease given away for re-sale, no bogus developers, we are so tired of that. There WILL hopefully be a change in council to honest members who wish to represent the peoples best interest and not their own pockets.

#1 Concerned Citizen » 2012-09-10 06:46

Dem man plan to make $100's of million of dollars out of Barbuda, what will they give the Island they will bring in supplies and goods duty free they will buy dem cars to drive around Barbuda like big 4x4 jeeps and they will get duty free they will pay no tax on there profits and they will then go and live somewhere else and spend all the profits that they make after they sell the IDEA of building something because they can't afford to build it themselves. If this company is serious they should be able to put a guarantees in place of over $10 M USD
