Suicide Attempt Foiled

Suicide AttemptAntigua St. John's - An attempt by a 64-year old Browne’s Avenue man to take his own life was foiled by the quick action of good Samaritan who is now being credited with saving the man’s life.

Eye witnesses account say the man – a well-known motor vehicle body repair man, attempted to take his life when he tied a strap to a concrete wall in Radio Range, then tied the other end around his neck and then attempted to drive off in a motor car.

Police officers who later arrived on the scene said the velocity of the car moving forward would more than likely snap his neck and kill him in the process.

Caribarena.com learned that an eye witness noticed something odd happening and immediately called for help. A motor mechanic, Molwyn Pelle, was working on a vehicle nearby and rushed to the scene. His action is said to have saved his life. This happened around eight o’clock Saturday night.

“When I got to the car, the ignition was already on and the vehicle was just moving off, I quickly opened the car door and shifted the lever from (D) to (P) and stopped the car. The strap was already choking him and he was already bleeding from his mouth and nose. The other guys helped me loosen the strap from around his neck and we then called the ambulance,” Pelle reported.

EMS Technicians were quickly on the scene and they spent over half an hour on the scene administering oxygen and other emergency care to the man before whisking him away to Mount St John’s Hospital for more detailed medical care.

The motor car used in the attempted suicide was a Toyota Campy.

The police say they are now investigating what may have driven the man to attempt to take his own life.

Prayer vigil? UPP? Really?
You people need to stop! Get off your knees, put your shoes on, put your work gloves on and start to DO.
Old folks used to say ' God help those who help themselves" so while you are waiting on God to help you, WHAT are you doing, about all the stuff for which you are praying.
These are the times when I understand what Karl Marx meant when he described religion as an Opiate, cause when you are "high" you don't function properly and our people are so "high" on prayer and God we sit down on our hands waiting......fo r what?
Just my opinion. Have fun with this one

I have had a relative commit suicide. I have had relatives who suffer from mental illness. I myself have been diagnosed with depression and daily I take a pill to keep me balanced....I suffered from depression long before UPP.
Does the current world wide economic issues and a plethora of other factors contribute to depression which leads to feelings of hopelessness, where the only option at times appear to be Death....
Some of us are fortunate to be around friends and relatives who see mental illness as that, an illness and not some sort of curse for which society wants to lock you up in a 'crazy house'.
I have just read some of the most, callous, unscionable statements...I am ashamed for those people. Thanks to those of you who at least showed some humanity and empathy for this man and his family

What can we do as a community to help people like him and all those unemployed and in need, do we pray and tell them "be warmed and filled" God will take care of you while we eat our steaks and salads and desserts. Help materially those who upu can prayer alone is not enough when one is hungry and homeless. Young persons are begging in the streets, some appear homeless. It is the UPP Governments responsibility to fix this situation especially since they caused a lot of it with there inability to create economic growth in the country.

There is despair among the old and the young in Antigua at a level that we ahave never seen before. This man is very likely clinically depressed if he has no history of this mental illness it s likely that the cause of his depression is a "situation" maybe he is in debt and cant make ends meets nad the feeling of hopelessness overwhelmed him. I am aware that our mental health facilities are poorer than poor here, he is going to need therapy to uncover the cause of his anger turned inward and medication to correct the chemical inbalance in his brain. His action demonstrates he has lost his faith in the providence of God and Gods capacityu to give the strength to endure hardship, he is going to need spiritual guidance to restore his faith.

How is that a 'good Samaritan'? If somebody wants to end their life its theirs, let them!
This man obviously didn't want his life to be saved. Chupse.

I'm so sorry to hear of his attempt, but praise the Lord that someone intervened. Hopelessness is the worst feeling. I pray that this gentleman finds hope and peace in the Lord Jesus Christ. No one/nothing else can offer you that.

Psalm 37:23 The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.
24 Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand.
25 I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.
26 He is ever merciful, and lendeth; and his seed is blessed.
27 Depart from evil, and do good; and dwell for evermore.

The Bible says: God is "in us, around us and through us" The Bible also says "Ask unto him, and it shall be given unto you" Prayer is the most powerful thing and God is in everything and we do need to take God and Prayer very seriously!! I am a strong believer in God and Jesus. But The Bible also says "The Lord helps those that help themselves" so we need to "seek and ye shall find" through prayer the strength to go through these harsh times, help the one "weak" like with this terrible sad situation. BUT STOP BURRYING OUR HEADS IN THE SAND and go back to "The Lord helps those that help themselves" and get ride of this terrible Government. I am not against the Government, I even supported them in change in the beginning BUT I support God and the People and what is taking place in this land that is driving people to extreme meassures is as a result of the heads of this land which is the Government. People are becoming so depressed, so sad, so overwhelmed that they are resulting to taking other people's lives or there own lives.

A perfect example is that of some preachers who tell their congregation,gi ve God his share first, they continue to give year in and yrs out awaiting their miracle, living in dire poverty while the Ministers and their families continue to live in the laspe of luxury,i say this to say,Prayer& faith without action is dead, you do nothing to help better your situation, you will remain in your situation until your end,no matter how much you pray.

I really wish some of you would get real and get out of your little cockle shells that you live in.This is the real world, and there exists real problems. It is nice to sit and say we need to pray( and we all need to) but God helps those that try to help himself. When so many persons cannot find a away to make a decent living outrageous bills are piling up from one mt to the next, some may even be facing losing their homes, the only place that blame should be put is on the sitting Administration, the root of the problem is the Govt and the solution is to get rid of the problem from its root.If these maladys in any society is not attributed to Govt policies and actions then i dont know what else is,maybe we dont need a govt then, all we should do is pray and sit and wait for God to place some moneys on our dressers while we sleep overnight,I am almost sure that will not happen.

It's very sad what that poor man tried to do to himself, I pray God blessing on him and his loved ones. I am sure there are still persons out there to reach out to before taking a drastic step like that. God cares and he knows and helps us all.

No money, Food Expensive, Crazy taxes, sky high APUA Bills, no jobs, late pay of pensions, public workers can't get paid on time. Some people don't know where their next meal is coming from and have poor living conditions. So many fatherless children with no means of proper aid implace from the government. Banks for closing on homes and businesses, businesses closing or relocating to other countries. It is the Government and if you dont think it's the Government you have lived here long enough or you have a short memory and have for gotten how live was before this Government. You think that all of the above is not enough to send someone into serious depression? Wake up!! If UPP was not in power and another Government was doing all this Crap, it would be that government's fault too. It is a sad situation, I wonder how many others we have to loose before people stand up against what is happening.

Stop Be passive!!!

#12 Not into Politics » 2012-09-02 18:00

It is a sad situation. Some of you saying it not politics, whether it this clound government (UPP) or any other. What goes on in our society is related to the Government. WAKE UP!!! Why are we Antiguans and Caribbean people so passive. You really think the lack of money in our economy, lack of jobs. The massive debt some people have, the crazy taxes, the price of food, the ridiculous APUA bills and everything else going on in our society is not enough to drive some people in serious depression. Suicide may have taken place from time, but it usually in this society is as a result of some passion depression AKA knucle!!! Get facts we have lost our society, we have lost our Country and we are now losing our people. How much will it take for people to wake up and get back some of the back bone that the generations before us had. At least from the generations of the 1930's -1980's cuz  after that we became lost. It is Political

We all know he needs help/prayer,we also know people have been commiting suicide before there were you or me,however there appear to be a rising trend in suicidal attempts.People dont just decide to end their lives,it must be bought on by some deep seated problem, in almost all cases Finacial and matters of the heart.None of us knows the facts surrounding this, however we are free to voice our opinions,It was three days ago a young Man was found dead,Suicide also assumed. As you said not everyone can cope with depression, same way not everyone can deal with the situations faced by many persons in A,gua today.

All this talk about UPP and because its them why this man kill himself is just off the wall.
Lets not put politics in this.
Our island needs deliverance from the evil that is among us.
Our ports of entry are all open and the demons have now arisen.
Antigua is a very open island and a lot of people are now practicing witchcraft and selling themselves to the devil for worldly gains.
We need to pray for this man and for all our family members...espec ially our small children.
ONLY GOD CAN HELP US NOW!!!!!

Even with something Like this people still talking about politics???? People have been committing suicide long before UPP took over. Don't get me wrong cause i know the first thing that's going to be said is that I'm a UPP supporter which i not the case since i don't reside in Antigua. This is obviously someone who needs help because of whatever reasons known to him. This man needs prayer and all the support he can possibly get. Learn to see the bigger picture of things. So many people walk around with a smile daily not knowing they are troubled. Not everybody knows how to cope with depression.

Disillusionment

#2 Jumbee Picknee » 2012-09-02 03:14

It's a very sad thing to know someone wants to take their life. I hope he fully recovers from his disillusionment . KUDOS to Pelle and the Good Samaritan.
There is an air of disillusionment floating around Our Nation and it's very disheartening.
A National prayer vigil for a month woul be a great thing, where all religious, civic, community groups etc can come together and of counseling and positive encouragememt.
