Hotels Petition Falls Short of Target Timeline

Beach House BarbudaAntigua St. John's - A petition to force authorities to take action on two dormant resorts on Barbuda has fallen short of its one-week target.

Organiser Linton Thomas said he has so far received about a half of the 500 minimum signatures being sought to force the re-opening of the 230-plus-acre K Club and the 90-acre Beach House.

Thomas, a businessman, said he was not able to get more signatures by Wednesday because he has been confined to his shop.

However, he said he would be making a more concerted effort to go through the village and to have all the signatures by Saturday.

"I hope, weather permitting, we may have that goal by the weekend so next week we will have that village meeting to get a resolution from the people in terms of what they want the council and the government to do," Thomas said.

Copies of the petition and the resolution will be forwarded to the governor general, the prime minister, the opposition leader, the parliamentary representative, the Barbuda Council and the owner of the resorts and their representatives.

The community activist said it is important that Barbuda residents approach the government as a "people" to drive home the seriousness of the situation.

"Everybody is very, very unhappy with the situation and they definitely want something done about the Beach House and the K Club," Thomas said.
Unemployment is among areas worse affected by the sister isle's ongoing economic woes.

is this for real?

So after the petition gets 500 signatures what next? After the HMB fiasco what powers do you think the PM has, especially in this economic climate to get those properties open? We have a big hole with HMB where the government's best option seems to be giving the property back to the former owners. Does Thomas really live in this nation state?
