Dr. Cort for Speedy Resolution of Labour Matters

Dr. Errol CortAntigua St. John’s - Minister of Labour Hon. Dr. Errol Cort has confirmed reports of ongoing talks with the Antigua Trade Union Congress regarding pressing concerns of tardiness in the department of labour with regards to the processing of matters brought before it.

Speaking with Caribarena on Monday, the labour minister said there are several issues that must be considered at this time with regards to charges being brought against certain establishments by labour unions.

Dr. Cort, who is currently off-island, said he plans to address the matter of tardiness in the department upon his return to the island shortly.

He said the issue of processing claims and allowing them to get to the industrial court, if necessary, for a timely hearing is something of notable concern and one that indeed sits on the forefront of his desk.

“I have had a very useful meeting with the Trade Union Congress discussing those issues and trying to find an amicable approach in resolving these matters,” he told Caribarena.

That meeting was held on August 9 last and was attended by TUC President Kim Burdon and a number of other executives. Labour Commissioner Hesketh Williams and several of his officers joined the Minister on his side of the table.

“I certainly shared some thoughts with the Congress and asked for their input in terms of how best we can move forward with the matters.

“I am looking forward to making some announcements towards the end of the month in terms of how we are going to move forward,” Dr. Cort said.

Further, the minister said he would be checking in with the TUC upon his return to see how many – if any – of these suggestions would be willingly accepted and promptly initiated.

“I will make a formal statement when I get back home and before I do that Iwill touch base again with the TUC to get their feedback in terms of some of the commitments we had made to them on how best we could move forward…” the Minister said.

"Burton believes the minister and the Labour Department should be given the chance to correct the shortcomings, since the slow response of the public service mechanism is an “understandable ” fact". THIS STATEMENT IS ATTRIBUTED TO KIM BURTON IN AN ARTICLE DATED, Thursday, 26 April 2012 02:30 (ALMOST 4 MONTHS AGO). Wow!!! Somebody definitely joking (in my opinon).

I hear that the present Labour Commissioner MAY be replace by another male presently his supervision. All I would say is that if what I am hearing is true, WE WOULD HAVE JUMPED STRAIGHT FROM THE FRYING PAN AND RIGHT IN THE CENTER OF THE FIRE. What a tragedy that would be.
