Police to Train Schools’ Security

Police training photoAntigua St. John’s - The Royal Police Force of Antigua & Barbuda in conjunction with the Antigua & Barbuda Defence Force, will be conducting two one-week training sessions for security guards who work at the nation’s school plants.

The first training session, which will take place at the Langfords Police Training School, takes place on Monday, 20th August 2012.

Superintendent Clement Solomon said one of the reasons for the training was the difficulty that schools were facing with students having weapons on the school compound. Some of the areas to be covered during the sessions include Profiling, Search Techniques, Leadership, and Customer Service.

Approximately 40 security guards are expected to participate in each session, thereby covering a majority of those that work within the school system. They will be drawn from two private security firms as well as the government security arm.

It is expected that with this training the level of security at schools will be greatly improved, and there will be a decrease in the number of fights among students. The aim is to provide a safe environment for learning at the school plants, and foster a sense of security among the students.

Monday’s session will begin with a short Opening Ceremony.

Today, it is said that profiling is illegal and unconstitutiona l. So, it would be better to say evidence gathering or observation. If you profile the result will be, a particular race or group will be isolated and found to be suspicious, and then what happens, illegal search and seizure, and people's constitutional rights are taken.

So, the proper word is observation, not profiling.

rupert j - follow the law

Quote:
SECURITY GUARDS 12. (1) A person who—(f) successfully completes the programme of training approved by the Commissioner www.laws.gov.ag/acts/2006/a2006-11.pdf pg8
rupert j, the THE PRIVATE SECURITY REGISTRATION ACT 2006 has a requirement that security guards must be trained. The training program must be approved by the Chief of police. If this is being done, as the law states it should, why would we need to engage in the above actions?

Concerned Resident, well said. The act (THE PRIVATE SECURITY REGISTRATION ACT 2006) with the regulation you mentioned was passed in 2006. This action is a further reminder that too many in authority have business interest in these security firms. I have to wonder which body will train them how to do proper patrols since this also is a skill which seems lacking in our local police force.

While I laud the police and defence forces for training the security guards that are deployed at our secondary schools, this is at the public's expense. All security guards were supposed to be trained to standards by July 2012. If these guards had received training, they wouldn't need the police and defence forces to intervene now. Should the police/defence forces be required to train all the security guards of which there are thousands engaged in Antigua/Barbuda ? I think not. The private security companies are responsible for training their employees not the police/defence forces.

Police training security guards? This has to be a joke? Everytime you read the paper a police officer is involved in a crime or being accused of brutality and they are serious about training SCHOOL security guards? Heaven help us.
Mr. Commissioner please use the resourses to start cleaning up the rank and file because the citizens and children need protection from your officers.
