Imports of Dominica Produce Restricted

Imports of Dominica Produce RestrictedAntigua St. John’s – Mangoes and guavas from the Commonwealth of Dominica have been banned from coming into Antigua & Barbuda and the public is asked to note that all such imports into the country will be confiscated and destroyed.

The advisory comes from the Plant Protection Unit (PPU) in the Ministry of Agriculture which has instituted measures to control the importation of selected produce in light of “a number of phytosanitary (plant health) issues that have developed in recent times”.

The restrictions also apply to bananas, plantains, cut flowers, spices, and dried coconuts.

“Effective immediately, commercial consignments of banana and plantain fruit ONLY may be imported into Antigua & Barbuda from Dominica,” the PPU said in a release.

“Personal consignments of bananas and plantains are absolutely prohibited. All consignments of bananas and plantains MUST be accompanied by a valid Phytosanitary Certificate issued by Plant Quarantine Dominica as well as a valid Import Permit issued by Plant Protection Antigua & Barbuda.

Entire consignments containing plantain and banana that do not meet the requirements WILL be confiscated.”

The PPU is also reminding prospective importers of cut flowers, spices ground and whole, including cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg and dried coconuts, that they should have a valid Import Permit issued by Plant Protection in order to bring those items into the country.

Such consignments, both personal and commercial, must also be accompanied by a valid Phytosanitary Certificate issued by Plant Quarantine in Dominica.

“Strict compliance with the above requirements is expected as we try to exclude pests that could devastate plant life in Antigua & Barbuda,” the PPU said.

“Applications for Import Permits must be submitted to Plant Protection headquarters at least 48 hours before they are required for presentation to authorities in Dominica. For further information, Plant Protection may be contacted at (268)764-1255 and/or (268)764-7378.

So is that a good thing, or a bad thing? Either way, it would put a fine point on this "independence" illusion.
