Antigua St. John's - Guyanese living in Antigua came together on August 1 for a candlelight vigil to stand in solidarity with their countrymen who lost their lives in mid-July during a protest against an electricity tariff hike.
The gathering was held on the grounds of the Zion Church of God on North Street Antigua.
Now dubbed the “Linden Martyrs,” the men were both said to have been shot in the heart by riot control police officers. The lawmen were supposed to have been using rubber bullets to control a crowd of thousands that converged on the country’s second city to protest what they deemed an injustice.
Scores of Guyanese nationals from all walks of life gathered to show respect for their fallen brothers. Among them were relatives of others who were shot and injured during the protests. Those killed were reported to have been buried on August 1. The demonstrations in Linden continue today.
Caribarena contacted Bobby Reis, Guyanese Ambassador to Antigua & Barbuda, for a comment on the matter some time before the vigil was to be held.

Mr.
The time has come for these injustices to be brought to an end and the perpetrators brought to justice.

Ask a sincere Guyanese
Ambassador Reis is ambassador for the PPP Party in Guyana not for the entire nation. As such, he would not sincerely speak to the situation that was directly caused by the UPP government in Guyana. Guyanese would know this fact and therefore would not be moved by Bobby's comment.
