Street Naming Controversy Resolved

Street Naming Controversy ResolvedAntigua St. John’s – An impasse between two neighbourhood watch groups over the double-naming of streets in Clarke’s Hill has been resolved with both parties agreeing to end the four-year long dispute.

In late June, Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Social Transformation, Consumer Affairs and Local Government convened a meeting with representatives of the two community groups, representatives of Local Government, Development Control Authority (DCA), the Ministry of Legal Affairs, and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Social Transformation, Cecily Philip.

Under the agreement, the road network from All Saints Road which connects “Walkdaille” and “Cedar Drive” will be renamed “Unity Drive”. It was further agreed that both community groups will work together to off-set the cost of constructing and erecting the new sign.

The community will formally request the Local Government Department’s permission to re-name the road Unity Drive, in order to allow that department to involve DCA and the Survey Department in the process to officially and legally register the new name.

“The calculation behind the settlement not only remedies the obvious challenges of having the street double-named, but I was more concerned with addressing the dividing impact it’s creating in the community,” Senator Parker said.

Meanwhile, executives representing the neighborhood watch groups from the North and South of Clarkes Hill, Eversleigh Warner and Andy David respectively, both pledged their commitment to work collaboratively in the interest of Community Development.

Warner, President of the Clarke’s Hill/Belle Vue Estate Neighborhood Watch Group, said: “Our group is happy that the matter has been resolved. It was a long drawn out and unfortunate situation that had developed and we are happy that the matter has been resolved.”

David, who is the Vice President of the group in the South, also concurred, “I am extremely satisfied with what we agreed on. We are always for unity and co-operation between the two groups.”

The parties expressed their gratitude to Senator Parker for her timely intervention and the effective management of the matter.

Minister of Health, Social Transformation, Consumer Affairs and Local Government Willmoth Daniel also weighed in by encouraging the public to continue in the spirit of volunteerism.

“I am urging the public not to be deterred by the impasse that had spilled over in the media,” Daniel said.

He also took the opportunity to commend the groups on reaching a fitting resolution.

It's true our brains must be fried from the sun! Four Years to name a street?
It would almost be funny if it wasn't so sad and emba**ing. Did you really need Ms. Parker to resolve this? Is anybody home upstairs.

Attention all Antiguans FOUR Hours to name a street is too long, forget four years. From now on any street naming should be done by throwing names in a hat and have a Four year old pull the name out. Done! Move along!

Is there a "Sir Allen Avenue" yet? After all the stolen money he donated to Antigua, the least he should get is a street name.

Maybe a more culturally appropriate name would work better. Perhaps: Ponzi Scheme Boulevard?
