Olympics Broadcast Rights Explained

Olympics Broadcast Rights ExplainedAntigua St. John’s - The International Media Content Limited (IMC), whose corporate offices in Jamaica, has the exclusive rights to broadcast the 2012 Olympics for both television and radio throughout the Caribbean.

The agreement means viewers in the entire Caribbean region will not be able to view the Olympic coverage on major networks such as the National Broadcasting Association (NBC) in the United States, but rather through the IMC feed.

Following through on the IMC arrangement, cable subscribers were informed that state-owned ABS Television was the designated channel that would be carrying the Olympic events for Antigua & Barbuda.

However, on Observer Radio’s Voice of the People talk show yesterday, a number of disgruntled residents voiced their frustration with the poor quality of the broadcast offerings on ABS, along with their displeasure at the severe limitations to the time and scope of the Olympic coverage.

This outrage prompted Minister of Information, Broadcasting, Telecommunications, Science and Technology, Honourable Dr. Edmond Mansoor to call in to the programme in an attempt to clarify the IMC exclusivity rights.

He added that an attempt would be made to address the concerns and arrive at a more amicable arrangement during a conference call with IMC principals that was scheduled for yesterday afternoon.

Meantime, the Antigua & Barbuda Government website has since quoted Minister Mansoor as saying that government has ensured that both Karib Cable and CTV have the same broadcast rights in Antigua & Barbuda.

“Over 97 per cent of Antiguans and Barbudans with a TV in their homes have a cable subscription. Both Karib Cable and CTV have co-operated closely with Government to ensure that the vast majority of Antiguans and Barbudans, who are desirous of watching the IMC Olympics feed, can do so,” Minister Mansoor said.

Karib Cable is providing 24-hour Olympic coverage on channel K45 and CTV is providing 24-hour Olympic coverage on channel 600.

“It is my understanding from the IMC that both the international Olympics Committee and NBC contacted IMC and got their assurance that NBC feeds would not be shown in the Caribbean region. This would include the regular NBC channel, MSNBC and the BRAVO channel. IMC has one main channel essentially focusing on a lot of the events that Caribbean athletes are participating in,” Dr Mansoor added.

In the case of ABS Television, there will be a blend of Olympic coverage, Carnival coverage, and cricket coverage. The Carnival coverage on ABS TV will predominantly be in the form of a delayed broadcast from Carnival City, commencing at midnight.

RE: Olympics Broadcast Rights Explained

#25 sharonl » 2012-08-02 16:33

This is extremely tragic that we could not negotiate a better set of options for the paying public. I do not understand why people feel that because we do not live in the first world we must be forced to put up with mediocrity from our own poeple. IMC whoever they are do not appear to care about the quality of the broadcast they are providing and it appears that our respective Governments and cable companies have no other choice but to accept this. Why is lawn tennis entirely excluded from the feed and can we get an explanation? There must be something we can collectively do about being served up this crap.

I personally will be boycotting all and any advertisers that I see on this disaster of an Olympics. I hope you all will join me. It is only in hurting them in their pockets can we make them stop this nonsense.
IMC did this to make money which is okay however the product ** and I'm not going to pay for it by supporting it. If the advertisers know we won't be buying from them they won't advertise with IMC. I let my money do my talking. This time the government had nothing to do with it.

Stupidness

#22 Unbelievable » 2012-08-01 19:27

Let me just remind the powers that be, that the main industry of the Caribbean, is Tourism. People on vacation are still interested in what is going on in the Olympics and how their home Country is doing. This is total stupidness, and I am totally emba**ed when I have to explain what is happening here. Let me also say that, when I lived in Canada, although only one US company had the exclusive rights, that did not stop broadcasting in Canada, and visa versa. It was so nice to be able to surf around, to get the coverage you wanted. I think the Govts of the Caribbean really should take a harder look at what is going on here, because it is making all of us look like country hicks.!!!

This is a bunch of crap if you ask me. I find it wholly improper for us to be forced to watach whatever IMC feeds us. As a matter of fact, the offering by IMC does not always match what is shown by NBC/others. I am a firm believer that variety needs to be encouraged so that persons get a full appreciation of the games. There is no need for one to be forced to watch Rowing on IMC -a sport one does not understand- when one could be watching Women's Soccer/Volleyba ll on one of the available channels. In the spirit of the Olympics the Min. of Broadcasting should encourage variety. Further I take umbrage to IMC having those 15-20min of side interviews when they could be showing some one of the available events.
This sort of control in this day and age is improper and must be sorted out before the weekend athletics program commences.

Poor Coverage

#20 Poor » 2012-07-31 23:34

Another note, the channel "Bravo" are showing exclusive coverage of the tennis event at Wimbledon for the Olympics, arguably one of the more interesting events, and I know a lot of people follow tennis. Since CTV and Karib blocked Bravo, there is now no way at all of watching any tennis, as the other offerings show zero tennis at all....Again I must revert to illegal internet streams.

What an awful mess, yet this is what I have come to expect in Antigua, how can a situation like this even arise for the most important sporting event in 4 years?????..... Simply embar**ing.

Poor Coverage

#19 Poor » 2012-07-31 23:32

This is the kind of thing that encourages piracy, I pay for a cable subscription, which is supposed to be vastly superior television coverage. I was so excited for the olympics, and the great coverage that NBC etc... are showing.

What we are offered is a joke. Channel 600 doesn't work for me, and when it does it is complete rubbish coverage, the quality of the ABS channel and other local offerings are simply awful, and the selection of events is awful. I am forced to watch illegal streams on the internet, as the quality is better and the choice is better....How can it be that in a 2nd world country like Antigua, and paying a large cable subscription that I can't even watch decent coverage of the Olympics??? Outrageous.

It was always going to be s-t-r-e-t-c-h trying to cover the Olympics with one broadcast feed... Fortunately with the advancement of the information super highway, whenever IMC is not showing a sport that interest me, i just find a stream on the internet and watch it on my computer. There are a lot of streams available...... ..

I could be wrong but judging from the last cricket world cup, my instincts tells me that CVM TV Jamaica crafted a plan to provide the Jamaican public with coverage of the Jamaican athletes Olympic performances while having the rest of the English speaking caribbean foot the bill. Not bad.

Talk about supporting our own.

CVM TV of Jamaica bought the rights from IMC Ltd which has the broadcast rights throughout the Caribbean. Are Guadeloupe, Martinique and St Maarten included or do they get feeds from their mother countries? Do the US virgin islands have to stick IMC or are they getting NBC from the mainland USA?
Don't we have the right to opt out of their sloppy coverage? Could ABS buy rights from IMC for just Antigua just like their counterpart in Jamaica did for the entire region.
Furthermore I do not see how a TV station in Jamaica can appoint itself the sole broadcaster of an event of this magnitude for an entire region without consultation. How can this be viewed as 'supporting our own'? Do we even know how much this catastrophe is costing us daily? Can we afford it?
And yes we expect first world level service especially when we are paying first world prices.

The people in charge of SPORTS and TELECOMMUNICATI ONS,have no IDEA of what is happening at the OLIMPICS,so they do not care what people who are into sports see or the quality of the broadcast.
People should be able to choose what channel they want to see and not being forced to watch sports they do not know.
A class action Lawsuit should be brought against the two (2) Cable Company and let them fight the Minister of Communication.

Braodcasr Rights

#12 dadlison » 2012-07-31 14:18

People always say that there is money in sports. Where do you think this money comes from? Its not admissions. Its broadcast rights and merchandise sales. Yes it would be great if we could have the best Olympic coverage from all over the world, but we need to protect the broadcast rights market if we wish to keep watching the sports we so love. If we were able to watch any feed from any country how would the Olympics make any money?

Secondly, yes the feed is horrible and I agree with everyone's complaints that the people dem chat too much. That being said, we in the Caribbean need to stop wanting everything to be at the level of the first world. We are a developing region and we need to build our infrastructure from the ground up. Maybe in 20 years we will have great Olympic coverage on regionally owned networks, but before we get there we must support our own so they can get the means to develop, and not take short cuts and consume foreign products at the expense of ours.

#11 Galileo » 2012-07-31 11:10

Greed again with global corporations trying to manipulate everyone.NBC delaying coverage to increase prime time audience, imc invested 3 million to profit what?maybe 20 million at the back of struggling families in the caribbean during a recession?
these idiots with unnecessary in-studio chats, showing field, kayaking and shooting when basketball and soccer is taking place definitely dont understand the culture of the region and dont have the necessary expertise, they dont even have a facebook page or website to send in suggestions and knock them off with some cruel comments.I sincerely think they are just parasites seizing an opportunity to make money ...the whole olympic coverage really **...only one feed, damn it.

#9 It Is Me » 2012-07-31 10:02

@Cool Ruler ... You are living in the USA ... no wonder you always trying to defend this governments foolishness ... you don't have to live with it and you don't understand what is going on in Antigua.

It is not the same as what you have in the USA ... ya'll in the USA can choose between NBC, MSNBC, NBC Sports and BRAVO ... so if you don't like what event NBC is showing MSNBC will be showing a different event likewise for NBC Sports and Bravo. When I lived in Canada it was even more to choose from because they never blocked the NBC feeds and we got the CBC feeed as well as the 4 NBC feeds.

Here in Antigua the olympics are showing on 2 channels ABS sometimes and K45. To make things worse they are both showing the same feed they don't even have enough sense to show 2 different feeds.

So Cool Ruler it is not the same ... it is not even close ... and if you think people are complaining about NBC's commentating you should get a load of these losers on IMC!!!

Stepping back to the 80's

#8 It Is Me » 2012-07-31 09:49

Here in the year 2012 most peoplke are watching the Olympics world wide and they have atleast 4 channels to choose different events. So if you don't want to watch sailing you can watch volleyball or basketball. Here in Antigua in 2012 we are watching 1 feed like we are back in 1980. Then with that 1 feed they are killing us with commentry and hardly showing events. They are showing events in the background on their monitors while they are chatting about foolishness. I don't want to see or hear from IMC after this.

This is the BIGGEST sporting injustice in the Caribbean ever!!! We went from 5 channels of different Olympics coverage to 1 channel 1 feed!!!

I don't know how they can come to Antigua and tell us wath to watch and do this without the minister of information or Governments approval.

Me again.
To be told that "we can't do anything about it" is wrong. Will we get back our money for lost of viewing? We need a bureau of standards. Where is the consumer rights advocate? Why do we have to pay for our cable service and then be told 'we can't do anything about IMC'. This is greed at work, madness on display and total disregard for us the little people. This destroys the whole spirit of what the Olympics represent. It is the viewers who make the games what they are. I pay for cable to have a choice. The people who sit at home and glory in the skills of the world's best. I feel as though we the people have been shafted once again by the gluttonous few.

#5 Suffering Bad » 2012-07-31 08:42

Once again greed has triumph! It does not matter whether they have the capacity to successfully relay the Olympic events, it is that they have bought the rights. Let's be real. Can we really say that ABS can handle these games? And the Jamaicans. Do we enjoy watching them pretend to be anchor specialists? They talk about things they have not researched. In short, they just frustrate the bejesus out of you.
We waited 4 years for the games and in this technological age, it was supposed to be the best for us viewers. Instead, it is nothing but a NIGHTMARE. And don't talk about the CTV and Karib. No where else but in these backward islands would they be allowed to get away with their throw-their-han ds-in-the-air cop out attitude. We pay them for our cable subscription. We pay for all the channels and what these channels are broadcasting.

I think this against ppl rights we are paying our cable company for a cable service so we can see or watch ceertain channels i dont think anyone have the rights to tell us we can watch what we are paying to see, the minister dont care about the ppl he has his dish he ca watch anything he feels like that issue about having rights to broadcast olympics is for local television only and NBC is not a local TV network, so who are they trying to fool. i dont want to watch no IMC because they not bringing no good couverage of the olympics and the local ABS Tv is bull.

A xxxxxn and a Jamaican entity dictation what Antiguans watch in their own island. One who will NEVER be elected and the other couldn't care less. I understand CTV paid the GOAB/IMC 18,000US$ for the rights to broadcast...onl y to be told that they have to rebroadcast the decrepit coverage that IMC is provided...You may not like Tanny...I don't even like the guy...but back then he did a damn good job at negotiating the rebroadcasting deal.

I am here watching the same IMC feed and half hour ago they siad we were going to sailing. I haven't seen any sailing yet. A few short interviews with some participants, but the rest of the time has been spent by two in-studio men running their mouths off, realy saying nothing and one behaving that we are doing a course, Sailing 101. This is sooooooooo ridiculous. If this is what the next two weeks are going to be, they might as well give us radio coverage."Right now, we will take a break and when we come back we will talk about what our sailors will be doing tomorrow". That is what he just said. Give me an asprin somebody.

It is clear that in this region that the further we seem to go is the 'behinder' we get. I have been following the olympic games since the 1976 Montreal games and this is by far the worst coverage we have ever received. Even when the games went to Moscow and four years ago to China, the coverage was a million times better than we are getting now. It is horrible. This IMC feed is a waste of time. They have some people there who seem to think that the games is all about them; spending most of the time talking and they are not even expert on the various diciplines. Just today, they were showing squash, and it was not even that a Caribbean athelete was competing, but at the same time there was a exciting swimming event going on and while squash was on the screen, you heard the commentary for swimming; what a joke! IMC should take their coverage and shove it. We deserve better. Some people, like the minister, will just come and talk but I am certain they get the real coverage via their dish and such connections which we poor people cannot afford.
