Power Plant Subcommittee Recommendations Released

Wadadli Power Plant to be opened for a media tourAntigua St. John's - The Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda, during its weekly meeting on Tuesday, July 24, ratified the recommendations of the three-member Ministerial Committee appointed to advise Cabinet on an appropriate response to a June 25, 2012 letter from the Honourable Gaston Browne.

Mr. Browne, the St. John's City West parliamentary representative, asked Honourable Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer to investigate or enquire into the new Wadadli Power Plant.

The committee comprised Honourable Harold Lovell, Honourable Dr. Jacqui Quinn-Leandro, and Honourable Trevor Walker. Minister Walker replaced Honourable Dr. Errol Cort, who asked to be excused from the committee to avoid any perceived conflict of interest.

The committee reviewed a bundle of documents concerning the Wadadli Power Plant and the ongoing debate.

The recommendations are for responses to be provided to the questions submitted by the media after the press conference in February; for information to be furnished as requested under the Freedom of Information Act; and for the Wadadli Power Plant to be opened for a media tour and post-tour press conference.

The media will be advised of the date for the tour and press conference shortly.

Throughout this entire debate, those raising questions about the power plant have reposed maximum trust in the media and have said transparency in this arena will resolve the issue.

The Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda is confident that full disclosure in the media and, by extension the public, will confirm that the untoward speculations about the power plant are unfounded.

Can some one tell me if the engine number that the Chinese apologize for and said that number does not exist, what will happen to that number that will be replaced. Fair question.

I wonder ...

#21 Wadadli Blogger » 2012-07-27 15:21

I wonder if Derrick and Observer still want to take pictures and bring in their MAN engine technician or have they cooled down their tone now?

I hope Caribarena goes back and take the exact photographer and take the exact pictures they took of the engines and power plant the last time they visited.

It doesn't matter how they clean up ... the serial numbers and other telling signs will still be there to judge if those engines are new or refurbished.

Problem is ... wheter it is new or not we are having major issues with the engines ... they should just give them back and have them changed before warranty is over!!! After all we should want the very best for Antigua & Barbuda and our future generations deserve the best also ... not an old junky set of engines!!!

What's going on around here???

#20 It Is Me » 2012-07-27 15:10

So the famous subcommittee made their findings public now and I can't believe people even wasted time printing this.

First of all 3 cabinet members are making recommendations to the cabinet. In other words they are recommending to themselves.

Then to make it worse they have the nerve to recommend things that was to be done in the first place.

All 3 recommendations are required by law or principle practically and now they are coming to us like they are doing us a favour. What a joke!!!

So basically the UPP had to set up a subcommittee to cabinet to recommend that they be transparent with the public???

What ah thing!!!!!!!!

Hurry up and call the elections ... I can't take anymore of this UPP government and all their lies, deceits, corruption and dictatorship!!!

Having already done some sprucing up work the plants may appear okay to some, but like putting paint on old chipped wood, the internal problems will appear again, the generators will continue to swallow oil, while Antiguan,s continue to pay for it in fuel variation charges.I for one will not be satisfied until i see a reduction in my utility rate, that was a promise and should be honoured, anythi ng less is unacceptable,th is is one that the Govt should not be allowed to get away with. Bring on the march.

Grinding Paste and power washed

#14 Maco » 2012-07-27 09:37

APUA and chinese have been applying grinding paste to stop the leaking of oil from this old plant. They have been powerwashing, cleaning and sprucing up the old plant but nothing that they do can make the old plant new.

Is there a timeline?

#13 young analyst » 2012-07-27 09:01

I really would like to know if there is a timeline for the report to be presented to cabinet. Its almost like the PM is trying to sweep this matter under the mat, we need to hear if there is a timeline given so we can look out for this report.

I guess until the media is given the date for the tour of the plant, there will be a massive clean up operation there. However, let me remind BS and his corrupt government that paint and putty only make old board 'look new'. You cannot make old engines new. You can paint them up, clean up the il and then keep them off line until the tour is over so that there is no oil leak to be seen, but at the end of the day you cannot prevent them from breaking down regularly, because they are old and paint and cleaning up cannot change that. Bunch of bagabonds and scamps. I wonder how these fellows sleep at night; anyway it looks as though they don't because it is beginning to show on all of them.

Total disregard

#11 Anu » 2012-07-26 21:03

The actions portrayed by the 3 cabinet members clearly shows a total disregard for the opposition party and by extention the citizens of Antigua & Barbuda. A letter was written requesting a commission of Inquiry or an independent investigation. Nothing was mentioned of the two request in their recommendations , which is quite evident that it was never the govt's intention to fullfil the wishes of the people. This is clear evidences that UPP govt have something to hide.

#9 Oh Antigua!!!! » 2012-07-26 20:46

MP Browne must now be chumping at the bits and has no choice but to announce the dateS for the people of this country to come together in MASS protest of the contempt that PM Spencer and his ministers continue to dish out to us.
If Dr. Cort recused himself for possible conflict of of interest, how could minister Lovell serve on the committee? Isn't he the sitting minister of Finance? And if they had all agreed to the scandal how can any of them, individual or group be part of any kind of nvestigation into and over their own actions?
As Sir McClean Emanuel would sing; "Antiguans wake up, open up your eyes........... ......."

another stalling tactic

#6 tenman » 2012-07-26 19:13

So they needed to set up a cabinet subcommittee to decide whether they will be transparent? Does this not indicate they felt they may be a possibility that they may need to hide something? Its some of these same ministers, including the PM, who in the past stated they have provided all information. Their statement today shows the lie in the prior statements. Instead of setting up a commission of inquiry or an independent investigation as the letter requested, they now decide they would choose another route. One cannot be blamed for seeing this as another stalling tactic.

OH! HELL NO.

#5 CLASSICUS » 2012-07-26 18:22

Oh! Hell No. Not again.

Wasn't the Cabinet Sub-Committee set up to consider issues raised by MP Gaston Browne concerning the WPP and associated high cost. Surely MP Browne must be a simpleton to even react to this news story.

Is MP Browne a member of the media? Did he request visitation by the media? Did he ask for a Press conference to ventilate the seemingly shady transaactions?

Had to agree with Dr. Winston Peters.
Nowadays, there seemed to be more scallywags than there are honourable gentlemen and women holding public office.

Power Plant Subcommittee

#4 Anu » 2012-07-26 16:43

It is my opinion that timing was the essence in this whole exercise. Freedom of information is now available after 8 years; who will be leading this department, one of their associate with a questionable political past and a present business connection to UPP govt. The date will be given to media houses soon for the viewing of the WPP; it gives the employees at the WPP enough time to (as John Maginley did say) spruce up the plant(hope no break down occur during the media visit). This whole exercise was just created to give the UPP govt some time to give a false impression that all is well in Dodge city and the past information on the subject was alot of propaganda. They are however underestimating Antiguans intellectual capabilities. We the citizens of Antigua & Barbuda will not be fooled by your chicanery UPP. Enough is enough is too much. This is just the beginning of your political demise. We have had enough of all of you!

Shame! Shame! Shame!

#1 Dr. Winston Peters » 2012-07-26 16:00

Would the Cabinet Committee find its own Government guilty of gross negligence or founded ethical behavior? You guys are a set of complete jokers. At what point are you going to get it? People can't fooled by your optics and cosmetics anymore. Eloquence isn't competence, degrees do not mean ability, sweetmouth has nothing to do with ethical behavior.

Lov-Hell and Jackie Wimp should be ashamed that a none educated PM BS can use them for his only self promotion and turn them into utter half idiots. Shame, Shame, Shame even by Eric, Cool Ruler and PLM seatwiping standards! Shame...
