Heritage Quay To Be Revamped

A parking facility for taxisAntigua St. John’s – Relocating the Ministry of Health and developing a parking facility for taxis are two proposals that the St. John’s Development Corporation (SJDC) is preparing to review in order to revamp the operations in the area surrounding Heritage Quay.

Information posted on the government’s website said the proposals are part of an effort to remedy congestion and other issues affecting the Heritage Quay area and for revamping the operations in the heavily trafficked area.

“Specific proposals geared towards the overhauling of operations within the Heritage Quay area have been cited. The proposals are part of a preliminary document preceding a report commissioned by the SJDC. The report sets about to examine the physical structure of Heritage Quay, the layout of the complex, the problem of congestion and the areas designated for taxi operators,” article said.

“In an effort to ease the flow of congestion in and around the Quay, Chairman of the SJDC Sylvester Browne says it has been suggested that the Ministry of Health be moved to facilitate an easier flow of traffic. A parking facility solely for Taxi operators is another prime proposal being looked at by the Corporation in the vicinity of Wapping Lane.”

The Ministry of Tourism, SJDC and Global Destinations commissioned the Heritage Quay report last month, utilising the services of a consultancy team headed by Michael Greve, with assistance from OBM architects. Information was gathered from various cruise tourism sectors for the month of June.

Browne reportedly said stakeholders will be given a progress update when the [final] report is received in a week’s time, and that SJDC expects to implement other improvements towards the end of 2012.

SJDC is a joke

Revamped? It's not even 'vamped' so how can they 're-vamp' it? The place has come downhill for a long time now. Taximan and vendor running down there. The people running SJDC walk around every now and then like they're the kings of the jungle and everyone must bow down to them. They have at least 5 desks in their front office with at least five different young people who spend most of the day sleeping or surfing the web. Every now and then you hear of a new person being hired to run this section or that section and they too end up doing their 'walkabout' acting like queen. Is UPP cronies filling these 'important' offices, cronies who have no idea what the hell they're doing. None of the top dogs at SJDC have come close to making Heritage Quay or the Vendors Market what it should be...successful . It's actually quite pathetic, they have cushy jobs that pay fantastic salaries. They feel they owe no one and just own all. :zzz

First of all @ "get real" and "sir birdbrain" Your comments suggest you are not Antiguan, if this is the case, feel free to make your exit, and head for your greener pastures.

With regard to the article. There seems to be more taxi parking in town than not. The issue with taxi's appears to me to be in dispatching, which would be easier if done centrally. There is taxi parking all over town, but the taxis are not confined to those parking areas. This makes it nearly impossible for regular vehicles to find adequate parking. Where are the parking meters ?

Maybe it's just time to abandon the island and go back to Africa. The British brought Africans to raise sugar, and that was only because of slave labour.

Why stay now? Apparently, after 30 years, Antiguans haven't been able to sustain themselves on the island without borrowing (loans they can't repay), selling land (originally stolen from the Carib and Arawak Indians) leasing sovereignty (Gerald Bull, Japanese Whaling), crime (illegal internet gambling, arms transshipment to Apartheid South Africa ) and stealing (Stanford International Bank).

Is this what you call a "Nation"? Seriously???

Level it, and turn it into a transshipment point for the other small islands? That may work. Of course that would leave Antiguans to find some use for themselves. I guess they should have thought about that before they got themselves kicked out of Great Britain!

Antiguan Woman – a lot of time I feel so sorry for you – you have no objectivity whatsoever – you only live to destroy the UPP –and to reinstate the ALP in power again - nothing else matters to you. You have to regain the Treasury again so that you can have a repeat of the IHI rip-off and The APUA FUNDING swindles just to mention a few. Well I will tell you now, once and for all - that will not happen –never again. Who will re-hire the employee that stole from you?

Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock. Quote:
In the recently published report, Travel and Tourism’s Economic Impact 2011, Antigua and Barbuda is identified as the most tourism dependent nation in the Caribbean, with tourism contributing 74 percent of GDP in 2011. The tourism sector employs 69 percent of the workforce in Antigua and Barbuda, the highest in the ECCU. GoAB 2012 Budget.
Others told this to us!?
"Pay Attention!" GoAB's Permanent Committee on The Economy: Not one SOE! these entities do not answer to the stakeholders. Do they coordinate and are held accountable by GoAB? If they do, where is or how do they develop a shared Vision with the People?
Revisit the GG's Throne Speech and GoAB's 2012 Budget. Not a peep about the activities of SJDC. Not A peep about the growth of St. John's and St. John's Rural. Not a peep about improving their infrastructure. They lie dormant notwithstanding the exhoration to "Each Endeavouring All Achieving". These uncoordinated sallies must end. During the game in Tampa, our opponent's fans stated "each endeavouring, no achieving". I was not amused. Heaven Help The Nation Of Antigua & Barbuda

Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock. St. John's City on 2.9 Sq Miles with a Population of 22,193 and density of 7,652.8: In the Developed World that is a City which must have a Municipal Government. GOAB must now do the Honourable Thing. Scrap the SJDC. Pass A Municipal Act. Let Good & Visionary Governance Begin. Quote:
The development of a National Strategic plan will ensure that we plan for a secure future. It will require all hands on deck If we are to truly transform our nation to meet the challenges.- GoAB
Not just a few hired underlings and their FDI driven friends of Global Destinations who (developed)the Heritage Quay report last month, utilising the services of a consultancy team headed by Michael Greve, with assistance from OBM architects. Information was gathered from various cruise tourism sectors all based in the USA.
St. John's Rural on 25.6 Sq Miles with a pop of 29,054 has now surpassed the City. The Unplanned Growth must be brought to an end. The Land Use(Zoning) Plan must be enacted quickly and DCA given teeth to enforce the Law. There may be no alternative but to form one Municipal Jurisdiction with St. John's City.

Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock. Anyone know the History of the Waterfront, of High Street, of the Library, its architecture, the Water Fountain? This revamping need to include the vendor in the vendor's mall. the drop-off should be in by "the source" on Redcliffe Street, and allow the tourist to walk through vendor's mall Redcliffe Quay on their way back to the Ship in Heritage Quay and supporting the stores their too.
