Antiguan elected Mayor of Luton

Mayor Syd Knight and Wife RoseAntigua St. John’s - Antiguan‐born Councillor Sydney Knight took up duties as Mayor of Luton in the United Kingdom on May 15 2012, twelve days after his 69th birthday.

The ceremony for his investiture took place on May 23, a release said.

Knight, who grew up in Antigua, is the son of the late Felix and Ethelinda Knight of Ottos. He was a tailor at Lord’s Tailor Shop, and also worked at the General Post Office.

He left Antigua for London in 1966, while he was in his mid twenties, where his maternal grandmother lived.

Mayor Knight continued his education in London and while working for British Rails, his articulate nature and leadership qualities soon made him a shop steward.

In 1991, he became Councillor Sydney Knight, winning a seat on the Local Government Council in Sundon Park, Luton, as a British Labour Party Member. He served as an executive member of that council until 2003, when he lost his seat.

Eight years later, in the last election, he regained his seat, capturing the largest number of votes cast for any candidate. He was on his way to the mayor’s seat, where he now sits.

Councillor Mayor “Syd” Knight is the second of six siblings -- the youngest two of whom are retired school teacher Alice Knight and prominent physician Dr. James Knight, both of whom currently reside in Antigua. He is married to Rose Knight, originally from St. Kitts. The couple has three children and three grandchildren.

Though he belongs to the third generation of persons in his family to hold prominent public service and religious positions which were once reserved for white people, becoming Mayor of Luton, UK, is an accomplishment for which Sydney Knight deserves the greatest congratulations and respect.

Mayor Knight, I would suggest that you now use your influence and position to twin St John's with Luton, for the benefit of A&B. This would be a good way of giving back to your country.

Rosemarie, I understand your intention. However, Mayor Knight did not deserve the position. He earned it. When you deserve something, it is given to you. But when you earn something, you get it the old fashion way - hard work and perseverance!

Let's fix the little things before we attempt to fix the big things.

Congratulations goes out to Mr Knight for your achievement of being elected Mayor of Luton. You have indeed made us proud of you, being a son of the soil. I wish i could say the same thing about our present Government In The Sunshine. Mr Knight who achieved such accolade at age 69 years, clearly shows that the electorate has the confidence in his leadership irrespective of his age. What does that say about some of us in our beloved Antigua & Barbuda? A King has no honour in his country
