Antigua St. John’s - Following Thursday's success in Gaston Browne's "Turn in a Gun and get $1000" programme, the MP has announced that he will now be upping the tradeoff to $2000.
The unlicensed weapon, which was turned over some time after noon on Thursday, has already been handed over to police for processing.
Browne said he could not speak to the name and calibre of the weapon.
"All I know is that it is a gun and it can shoot and kill people," he said.
The weapon was handed over "in the strictest of confidence" and the individual who turned it in would not be prosecuted.
"We want to encourage other residents to do the same without fear of prosecution," Browne said. "The idea is to rid the streets of Point and Villa of illegal firearms."
The Member of Parliament said he hopes that the government would consider adopting a similar nationwide programme in order to gather wider results and make for safer streets.
Browne further said, "I want to thank my constituency for sharing the information and getting the weapon turned over."
He also expressed gratitude of the fact that the community has been spared further torment from three known firearm users who have been arrested. One of these individuals, Browne said, was found with a gun and ammunition in his possession.
"Now we are making some decent progress with peace and quiet in the community," he said.
