Illegal Firearm Traded for $1000

Illegal Firearm Traded for $1000Antigua St. John’s - Following Thursday's success in Gaston Browne's "Turn in a Gun and get $1000" programme, the MP has announced that he will now be upping the tradeoff to $2000.

The unlicensed weapon, which was turned over some time after noon on Thursday, has already been handed over to police for processing.

Browne said he could not speak to the name and calibre of the weapon.

"All I know is that it is a gun and it can shoot and kill people," he said.

The weapon was handed over "in the strictest of confidence" and the individual who turned it in would not be prosecuted.

"We want to encourage other residents to do the same without fear of prosecution," Browne said. "The idea is to rid the streets of Point and Villa of illegal firearms."

The Member of Parliament said he hopes that the government would consider adopting a similar nationwide programme in order to gather wider results and make for safer streets.

Browne further said, "I want to thank my constituency for sharing the information and getting the weapon turned over."

He also expressed gratitude of the fact that the community has been spared further torment from three known firearm users who have been arrested. One of these individuals, Browne said, was found with a gun and ammunition in his possession.

"Now we are making some decent progress with peace and quiet in the community," he said.

If this is a publicity stunt by MP Browne, I would welcome several more. Thanks to MP Browne and the police I now feel safer in my home.

I am of the view that our criminals are very "smart" and would not trade in a gun that they would use to commit a crime! And, do our "statistics" show a "drop" in crime, once the illegal guns are turned in? There is NO "peace and quiet" in our communities once the Police are "under-staff" and "under-equipped " to stop cime, and, our "residents" are affraid to report persons with illlegal guns to the Police! If we are going to tackle these illegal guns and ammunition, let's get work together to a national "consensus" from ALL "stakeholders" to get a "win/win" outcome!

There is no doubt that we have a "illegal guns" problem in this country, and, we should put measures in place to get them off our streets! The "constituency" of City West, like other "plagued" areas need all available "man-power" to fight crime! Yet, I agree with John French, Quote:
Where is the Good Hon. Dr. Min. Of Security? Where is the CoP? Where is the Legal Fraternity?
And, as Care-taker of the Viila and Point area, MP Browne is entitled to take the necessary steps to get "unlicensed weapon" guns off the streets with his "Turn in a Gun and get $1000" program! To some this is a "great noble" gesture of the MP, to others this all "publicity!" I have even heard by others on the streets that the "monies" paid in the "tradeoff" should gone to law enforcement or organized community groups to patrol the constituency and look for possible "criminality" and take the neccessary actions.

Now that is using your brains. What a way to boost the black market value of guns that are already on the island. Make the organized crime groups rich and cause the number of guns smuggled in to increase.

Just peachy, just peachy…..

The Parliamentarian ! His Money! His Action & The Receipt of A Gun!

#9 John French II » 2012-06-15 14:32

Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock. That "the Parliamentarian has put his money where his mouth is" has and is being applauded in many sectors of this SIDS.
A word of caution - this is a slippery slope to ..." hence I do not wish to rain on anyone's parade.
Where is the Good Hon. Dr. Min. Of Security? Where is the CoP? Where is the Legal Fraternity?
Maybe, just maybe, the Right Hon. Raslston Pompey can shed some light and clarity to educate this "bewildered and bemused population".
Antigua & Barbuda is a Nation of Laws with A Westminister Style Democracy. Has this been debated in Parliament and sent to the Upper House for sober second though & deliberation?
What is the Policy of the Reds? The Chairman has spoken outside of Parliament and has acted ouside of the GoAB, Security & Police. Is he acting with the consent of the Party? Is he acting with the consent of his Constituents. Is he acting as a Private Citizen/ Therein lies the Dilemma in this SIDS & Young Nation.
Mr. Pompey, in the absence of the reponsible regulatory agencies your Help with Divine Guidance for The Nation Of Antigua & Barbuda in cluding Redonda.

I commend Mr. Brown for taking this initiative; I can see signs of his leadership ability emerging. There was a gun amnesty initiated by Dr. Cort several months ago, however, I am not sure if a reward was offered in exchange for the weapon.

This has to be part one of a two step process. If the source of guns has been discovered and bottled up, then this initiative will go a long way in ridding the island of guns. However, if guns are still allowed to enter the country willy-nilly, persons will simply continue purchasing new firearms, then trading them in for a profit. We live on an island, it shouldn't be so hard to stop the flow of illegal substances in and out.

GIVING MORE GETTING MORE

#6 RESIDENT » 2012-06-15 11:08

A commendable effort by MP Browne in an attempt to make the community safe for all residents.
Half equal to the previous official amnesty that saw the recovery of two guns. It was not only for the money, but a people's trust and confidence.
You give more, you are likely to get more off the streets. Press on.

Yet another constructive contribution by an opposition MP. Gaston is becoming a good role model for opposition parliamentary contributions.

i think its a good idea however lets just hope that the funds received by these citizens will not be used to purchase an "upgraded" firearm.

I support the idea because it produces positive results.Gun violence is seriously destroying our communities and our lives-it's hurting and killing too many of our young people. In addition to trading gun for cash, from time to time, the police should also carry out a stop-and-frisk operation. This would catch criminals before they get the chance to commit any crime.
