Call For Local Investment In Dulcina Hotel

Barbuda. photo - newsok.comAntigua St John's - Opposition Barbuda Senator Arthur Nibbs, is calling on the Barbuda Council to put the abandoned Dulcina Hotel project on the market for investment by Antigua and Barbuda nationals.

Nibbs, who heads the Antigua Labour Party team on the Council, said the Dulcina Hotel is symbolic as it was the first hotel project to have been started by Barbudans.

The Dulcina Hotel is located at what is referred to as ‘River’  in Barbuda and several buildings were started and later abandoned. According to Nibbs, the original project was started by a group of Barbudans back in 1966 through a company they formed called Barbuda Light and Power. Among other things, it provided electricity and it also operated a wholesale business.

He said the company started the hotel but that when it was about 90 percent complete, the company ran into financial difficulties and the hotel was abandoned.

He added that several attempts were made to revive the project over the years. Among those who attempted was Winston Derrick, now chairman of the Observer group. Nibbs said he was able to put a number of the units into operation while he ran a restaurant there.

Nibbs said the people who started the hotel were pioneers with a vision. He said they pooled their resources together in an effort to help themselves and he is now calling on the current generation of Barbudans to follow this proud legacy and to come together in a spirit of cooperation for their own benefit.

He also wants opportunities to be made available for Antiguans to invest into the project as well.

Nibbs is suggesting that should a local consortium be formed that the government should give them all the necessary tax reliefs to ensure that the project succeeds.

Meanwhile, Nibbs said a town hall meeting will take place in Codrington Thursday night to discuss this and other issues related to development on the sister isle.

Nibbs and most of the Old leaders have completely lost the plot. Barbuda does not need investment into any of those dead projects, they just looking the 'finders fee' and a way to make a quick buck. I t does not need to give out 1,000's of acres to proven **s. It needs new leadership, new ideas, and a new way forward. It is not that hard.Watch this space. All Barbudans will benefit. The **s will realize the island is NOT for sale. Rest assured Barbuda will have the last laugh.

Why don't you build these things for Barbuda? You seem to think that one just had to say the word and it will appear. I don't think Barbuda's natural beauty should be intruded upon by all that "stuff" you're suggesting. I am not surprised that your comments has so many thumbs down :D hahahaha

Eat some humble/reality pie before you become SkyeWon't!

This can be a wonderful adventure and a tourist magnet. Eco-tourism the brain power is not there. This can be an ATV park and dirt bike venue complete with water sports, water features and a pirate theme. build a old spanish scooner and sink it in 20 feet of water and have people snorkel around it then market it to game shows and sports fans

GIVE ARTHUR NIBBS CREDIT

#3 THE GODFATHER » 2012-06-14 08:06

I support Arthur Nibbs, I know him peronally and he is making an effort ton revive the Dulcina Hotel, nothin is wrong with that. Many Antiguans are usually critical about not getting an oppurtunity to invest in Barbuda. Now an opportunity is available, get your groups together, don't let others take it from you.

Arthur Nibbs deserves credit, probably prior to any investment an environmental impact **sement should be done.

Local Investment in Dulcina

#2 Barbudan Abroad » 2012-06-14 06:40

Arthur Nibbs needs to wake up about locals or anyone investing in a hotel project on the sister isle.
There just isn't enough money locally to support such a project. Banks locally are unwilling to lend money for any such projects.
In addition, air service to Barbuda is at an all time low in terms of seats available from SVG airlines.
Finally this is a bad time to invest in a new venture on the twin island state when the tax situation for both islands is hindering any investment on either island.
Sorry Arthur but you are off base here. Stick to politics and not investments.

Stop talking

This guy is fresh out of ideas, this is why we see him
fomenting a dead horse. Time to talk about real meaningful
development, the marina is not flavorful now he is talking about
Dulcina old construction site. I ask you this question how much
of those houses fell into to the sea because of erosion. Why would you
want to continue on that site when you have sand mining going
on next to it to this date after you made such fan fair about stopping
ending sand mining on BARBUDA. I will tell you this Barbudans currently
working on their development - you don't know what is going on - too
erratic to lead.
