Antigua St John's - Opposition Barbuda Senator Arthur Nibbs, is calling on the Barbuda Council to put the abandoned Dulcina Hotel project on the market for investment by Antigua and Barbuda nationals.
Nibbs, who heads the Antigua Labour Party team on the Council, said the Dulcina Hotel is symbolic as it was the first hotel project to have been started by Barbudans.
The Dulcina Hotel is located at what is referred to as ‘River’ in Barbuda and several buildings were started and later abandoned. According to Nibbs, the original project was started by a group of Barbudans back in 1966 through a company they formed called Barbuda Light and Power. Among other things, it provided electricity and it also operated a wholesale business.
He said the company started the hotel but that when it was about 90 percent complete, the company ran into financial difficulties and the hotel was abandoned.
He added that several attempts were made to revive the project over the years. Among those who attempted was Winston Derrick, now chairman of the Observer group. Nibbs said he was able to put a number of the units into operation while he ran a restaurant there.
Nibbs said the people who started the hotel were pioneers with a vision. He said they pooled their resources together in an effort to help themselves and he is now calling on the current generation of Barbudans to follow this proud legacy and to come together in a spirit of cooperation for their own benefit.
He also wants opportunities to be made available for Antiguans to invest into the project as well.
Nibbs is suggesting that should a local consortium be formed that the government should give them all the necessary tax reliefs to ensure that the project succeeds.
Meanwhile, Nibbs said a town hall meeting will take place in Codrington Thursday night to discuss this and other issues related to development on the sister isle.

GIVE ARTHUR NIBBS CREDIT
Arthur Nibbs deserves credit, probably prior to any investment an environmental impact **sement should be done.
THE GODFATHER
Local Investment in Dulcina
There just isn't enough money locally to support such a project. Banks locally are unwilling to lend money for any such projects.
In addition, air service to Barbuda is at an all time low in terms of seats available from SVG airlines.
Finally this is a bad time to invest in a new venture on the twin island state when the tax situation for both islands is hindering any investment on either island.
Sorry Arthur but you are off base here. Stick to politics and not investments.

Stop talking
fomenting a dead horse. Time to talk about real meaningful
development, the marina is not flavorful now he is talking about
Dulcina old construction site. I ask you this question how much
of those houses fell into to the sea because of erosion. Why would you
want to continue on that site when you have sand mining going
on next to it to this date after you made such fan fair about stopping
ending sand mining on BARBUDA. I will tell you this Barbudans currently
working on their development - you don't know what is going on - too
erratic to lead.
