Multiple Engines Down At Chinese Power Plant

Multiple Engines Down At Chinese Power PlantAntigua St john's - Caribarena has been reliably informed that five of the six MAN SXD 12v32/40 engines at the Wadadli Power Plant at Crabb’s have been down for over three weeks.

According to our source, issues with fuel injectors, turbochargers, and overheating have been plaguing the operations of the electricity generating plant and, as a result, five of the engines had to be taken offline.

Our source has further revealed that in an effort to bring the engines back online, Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) has purchased new fuel injectors from overseas.

Caribarena would like to remind our readers of an instance (reported earlier) when APUA team witnessed the first attempted acceptance testing while the engines were still in China.

Twice during the initial acceptance testing, fuel injector pumps had gotten stuck, forcing the Chinese teams to take the specific engine offline.

This would seem to indicate that the issues that occurred during the acceptance testing have continued to plague the power plant.

Meanwhile, Antigua Power Company has increased its output in order to compensate for the Chinese Power Plant’s inability to supply adequate levels of electricity.

These seem to be the symptoms’ of NEW engines having threading problems – Did Gaston Browne tell us that he knows who paid who to SAY that the engines are old???? What a shame.

I wonder is Gaston and Harney think them pieces of junk still new. If I bought a diesel truck which needed new injectors in 6 months and I had to pay for them, I would consider myself real stupid. I wonder if that is why the gentleman gave up selling those Chinese Champion trucks.

Who cares that engines are old and are not working ... Benna Boyz are playing ... that's all the people seem to care about this week ... then next week it will be Carnival season ... who cares if we have to pay for old engines that probably wont work for more than 5 years ... Feasibility studies

#28 skyewill » 2012-06-11 22:39

They are only good is you are trying to see if a project can be benificial. Those who write them can make poopoo like like chocholate icream and convince that those little nuggets are almonds. That plant would look good on paper if the powers that be wanted it to look good. What we needed was a new plant that was green expandable. I don't need a study to tell me that. What I need is honest people to do the job and Antigua is short on honest.

I still say we should have went green and I still think we should have treated APC better. And I still believe that there is no need for a feasibility study. Why we already know it's feasible. We already know what is needed so all we have to do is put a good plan together from an operational stance and move. You tweek and adjust and constantly strive for improvement.

sorry Godfather, you are barking up the wrong tree. No political motivation, not singing for my supper. Not affiliated with anyone in the field of power generation.
Although I'm familiar with this type of engine, I have no opinion on whether these engines are old or new, but it's obvious to me, that they are no good. If I owned those engines, and, provided the deal was above board, I would send them back for a full refund. If the deal wasn't above board, I'd take them over to deep water harbor and dump them in the sea as additional moorings for the upcoming cruiseship season. :-)

And we are to be satisfied and say nothing.New,Re- con,or just plain old,it is obvious they are no good and inferior for our good money. This cannot be right, why is A,gua people soo quite? This would make BBC& CNN had the UPP been in opposition, the chaos they would create, and urge the people to create would be heard loud and clear. What really is going on here, this cannot be right. Then Apua breed down our poor necks to pay them, the management of Apua is just as guilty, because they know exactly whats going on but refuse to speak up,really i do not know how they sleep at nights, this is just outrageous.

#22 Just Sayin » 2012-06-11 16:58

So now I understand why we have been getting power outages every weekend for months, its because five of the six used rusting generators have failed. But according to Mr Spencer we have a wonderful deal after all its only cost the country $47 million dollars.....so far!

Mr Spencer, perhaps now you will allow a public enquiry into how these generators were purchased without parliamentary approval? How we ended up with used rusting generators that haven't worked properly since the day they arrived on the island and WHO is going to be held responsible for this fiasco which Antiguan's are going to have to pay for.

Mr Spencer even your own UPP followers are at a loss for words over your actions with these generators!

Skyewell, with respect, this was a comment from you some months ago regarding WPP:
Quote:
Agreed #1 skyewill » 2012-02-23 08:08 There are a whole lot more why nots these 2 issues are a good start. I for one believe that we should have went green and i agree with the writer on the way we treated APC. They are local Antiguans, they hire local and a lot of their money goes back into Antigua. The way the deal is being handled is so amature that It looks like kindergardeners put this together this is why there is so much contraverse. When things are done right and open there is less mess. Read more: http://www.caribarena.com/antigua/opinions/letter-to-editor/99733-missing-the-bigger-picture.html#ixzz1xVeT7JOH
Yet strangely today you argue no feasibility study was necessary we just needed to buy a better fossil fuel plant. How are your comments today inline with the past one which suggested the need for a feasibility study? Next time you are in Antigua lets grab some drinks to celebrate Oklahoma (in a few weeks) winning the NBA championship (you still owe me from last year) .

I am nor surprised that the 'godfather' would suggest sabotage in the Wadadli Power plant saga. That is how UPP supporters think. Many of them would not see the truth even if it hit them in the face. Like my daddy would say, "They are as blind as a blind man wearing wooden spectaqcles on a dark night and looking through a green bottle". The good book says that there is none so blind as he who have eyes and yet refuse to see. Heaven help them.

skyewill I find your last comment, illogical. If I ever find myself in need of a house, using your logic I won't examine the feasibility of existing options and my ability to pay. A big part of the problems we face in this country are knee ** reactions to issues. It is said we need a new airport so every few years we simply raise the taxes, and claim its all for a new airport that never happen. Decisions are simply not well thought out. skyewill, its the lack of feasibility studies why the government has problems explaining its decisions

Power Plant

#13 Anu » 2012-06-11 11:06

Every time i read about issues regarding the Wadadli power plant it makes me more and more disheartened. To have a Government borrowing so many millions of U.S. dollars without going to parliment, to purchase a power plant which they claim is new and not giving proper explanations to the many questions that have been circulated in our society, and the many challenges APUA has been faced with, in keeping the generators working to service our nation with electricity is nothing short of madness. Where is the transparency and accountability in this matter? Instead of being open and truthful with this matter, you have a Prime Minister hurling insults at the public and members of the opposition party, calling them all sorts of distasteful names. Does this solve the problem at hand? I am not satisfied with whats taking place with this WPP issue and I think that I speak for the majority of our citizens. We need answers. We need the truth. For all the problems that has been reported by Caribarena and the main opposition party (ALP), a public inquiry along with the motion of no confidence is needed sooner than later. We need a new mandate. Enough is enough is too much already. Smh.....

No feasibility study needed. Questions: do Antigua need a power plant that work. Answer: yes...Question: Are there power plants, less expensive and gauranteed to work. i.e Catapilla, Seimens, etc? Answer yes. its a plug and play all we needed was the money and tha ability to purchase the best thing for us. the problem this money came with a string. If they are down as reported then this is not good and would make VB3's **ment correct. Now I know there must be some expectation that these engines work based on the extreme cost. I feel if they don't work, take them back to the store, either replace them with good ones or give me my money back. simple right?

I need some more water, because this is a very hard pill to swallow. If I was in charge of the APC I would let them suffer for a while, which would force them to answer to the angry citizens. However, very soon it will be the very same APC that they have tried to sideline that will be the primary power producer in the country.

MUTIPLE ENGINES DOWN

#6 SUSAN » 2012-06-11 09:00

FIRST OF ALL ANTIGUA DIDN'T HAVE TO SEND ANYONE OR AN ENGINEER FOR TESTING OF THE ENGINES, ALL THEY NEEDED TO DO IS TO SEND THE SPECIFICATIONS FOR SUCH, UPON INSTALLATION, THEN THEY NEEDED TO HAVE THE MANUFACTURER TO DO THE INSTLLATION,UPO N COMPLETION OF SUCH, THEN DO A START-UP, ONCE START-UP & TRAINING IS COMPLETE THEN THEY SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN THE WARRANTY & THE SIGN-OFF OF SUCH. HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU HAVE GOTTEN THE SAME ENGINES THAT ANITUGA WITNESS DURING THE TESTING OVERSEAS? WHY IN THE WORLD THAT ANYONE WOULD HAVE DONE TESTING BEFORE THE ENGINES WERE DELIVERED? OR INSTALLATION IS COMPLETE, EVEN STEVIE WONDER OR RAY CHARLES COULD SEE THROUGHT THIS BS FROM PM & COMPANY THIS IS UNREAL. MARTIN KNOWS WHAT'S GOING ON WITH THE ENGINES, I HOPE HE IS PRAYING FOR THE WRONGS THAT HE HAS DONE TO PEOPLE, THERE IS STILL TIME TO MAKE YOUR PATH RIGHT.

what Will it take for us to get our monies back? There must be some type of return policy for these used engines. Is there an addendum to the contract that if the fuel injector issue happens during the first xx yrs we can return the engines no questions asked? What allowances were made to protect the Antiguan people from this xxxt? Heads need to start rolling over this outright & blatant xxxxtion. I take it that Clavis's ridiculous idea of a cash flow saving exercise has failed. It makes no sense to think that one can fix a expenditure problem by simply finding a new creditor. I gather the statement by APUA that they got what they paid for, simply means since they won't have to start paying the loan until 2013 (5 year moratorium), they have paid nothing. Its time for decisions like this to be guided by things like a feasibility study and not based on a PM emotions. Every time BS gets upset, tax payers are left on the hook for his bad decisions. Hopefully the government will find a way to ship those generators back to China with the next lobster shipment.
