UNICEF Supports Social Protection Reform Policy

Social Protection Reform Policy DiscussedAntigua St John's - A United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) specialist held dialogue with top level officials within the Ministry of Social Transformation aimed at developing the country’s Social Protection Reform Policy.

UNICEF Social and Economic Policy Specialist Jawad Aslam met with Minister of Social Transformation Hon. Willmoth Daniel, Parliamentary Secretary Senator Malaka Parker, Permanent Secretary Cicely Philip, Director of Social Policy Unit Almira Henry and Acting Project Development Officer Sharon Herbert yesterday during a familiarization visit to the ministry.

During the meeting, the main agenda item was Social Protection Reform as it relates to the harmonization and consolidation of policies with International laws, a release said.

The officials examined ways in which the organization could assist the ministry to develop the National Report on the Convention on the Rights of the Child for submission to the Geneva Committee within the next three to six months, Social Protection Reform particularly the development of Social Protection Policies, and exploring options to build capacity in the areas of monitoring and evaluation focusing on social protection programmes.

Training and other technical assistance will target technocrats within the Social Policy Unit, the release said.

Legal Reform was another area discussed with a view towards revising and enacting new legislations relating to children.

The Social and Economic Policy Specialist is also expected to visit the Chief Welfare Officer Cindy Price, later this week.

UNICEF has provided technical assistance in developing a National Child Care and Protection Reform Policy. This project is in its draft stage, and the National Child Care and Protection Reform Committee is conducting review of its contents.

Meanwhile, other projects are currently being mulled with other government counterparts.

Minister Daniel in welcoming Aslam to Antigua & Barbuda indicated that the government is committed to its obligations under the Convention to protect and ensure Children’s Right are protected and the legal and policy framework are instituted to advance the process.

This convention protects children's rights by setting standards in health care, education, and legal, civil and social services.

WAH! Mr. Daniel you look quite refreshing in that photo. Must be the nice white shirt. Just a tip - take out the earring and remove the chain (you will look more professional)
