More Serious Accident Waiting To Happen

Hole along the sidewalk on Valley RoadAntigua St john's - Another call is being made for the relevant authorities to repair a hole in a sidewalk before someone gets seriously injured.

The hole in question is located along the sidewalk on Valley Road, opposite the King George V Grounds. One young lady, who chose to remain anonymous, said she witnessed another lady’s shock and horror after her foot slipped and she fell into the drain last Saturday.

She reported that she had suffered the same mishap in the past. “I just looked across the road for a few seconds, and next thing I knew my foot was down in the hole with all that grime and smelly water. My whole body shook,” she said.

“It’s nearly two years now that hole is there…and nobody doing anything about it until somebody get(s) damage(d) real bad, a child, an elderly person or even a tourist only then would they act. The lady got a heavy fall and had problems to get up,” the source said.

She also expressed concern for the safety of the hordes of shoppers who frequent the vicinity on Saturday mornings.

Members of the public have made repeated calls for the government to cover up the gaping holes in the sidewalks that have been observed at various points throughout St John’s.

Caribarena has been informed that efforts are being made to address the issue with the head of St John’s Development Corporation (SJDC) with a view towards enhancing the aesthetics of St John’s.

the number of dangerous side walks

#7 Concern Citizen » 2012-06-11 10:36

There are many more dangerous sidewalks holes in St. John's, which persons have warned about on the airways. But public works doesn't realy seem to be concer. Eventhough we pride ourselves to bring many tourists here and cruiseships. These are all major accidents waiting to happen and the liability would be great. I guess it's the tax payers will have to put up the bill. Caribarena should sent out a team to take pictures of all these holes in town and place them on the website and let us see how long it takes Public Works to finish them. I almost fell in the one close to Gloria's Beauty Salon on Cross street as I was saying hello to someone passing in a vehicle next I see this big hole in front of me. Thank God for the right reaction I had. I think I made an Olympic jumping record.

Some time last year after visiting ANU,I commented on the horrible sidewalks and the high brushes, bushes, trees (choose a name) which lined the street, the airport road, and the route to the hotels, (Sandals etc). The question I posed was how did the members of the government (past or present) travel around Antigua. Did they use helicopter services so as to avoid these terrible sights on the island? It's about time the govt repair the sidewalks and potholes properly and stop patching holes in the streets and doing mediocre jobs. Get it done properly the first time and you won't have to do it again.

Oh! If only we Antiguans would not remover the covers or damage them with our cars when we park on the sidewalks. – Then of course the covers would be there and in good condition.
Yes these things must be repaired and replaced when damaged or missing, but we as responsible citizens must first take care of what we have and stop vandalizing them.
Stop stuffing rubbish in the cutters – that only cause more problems. The money to replace these items must come from some place - We complain when money has to be spent to correct what was already corrected.

Taxnomore they (Tourist) have sued and the matters have been settled out of court for a pretty sum. Its not an incentive to fix the problem because these settlements are not made public

These are the same sidewalks that the UPP spent tens of millions of dollars of tax payers money building and just a few years later they have fallen apart. It is a shame. This is another scandal of mega proportion like the fence, power plant, car park, Bencorp building, food city building and the list goes on and on. Until it costs tax payers millions in law suits, nothing will be done with these side walks. Jail, jail for those ** who have robbed this country blind.

Poor Sidewalks!

Having just returned from time on the island with my wife, who insisted on shopping in St John's. After spending the better part of the day trying to navigate open sewer grates, unsafe sidewalks, elevations on sidewalks at streets edge one would need a stepladder to negotiate which forces people into the street to get around creating an additional hazard. Why would the government not try to put the best possible foot forward by improving the situation not only for shopkeepers and residents, but also tourists who incidentally spend alot of money on the island. Do they not realize that in the internet age you cannot hide incompetance or skullduggery? Simple steps like repairing a simple sidewalk are improvements which return funds spent many times over. Or perhaps, they are waiting for a government official or wealthy tourist to sue?
