Massiah Represents in Guyana

Senator Joanne MassiahAntigua St John's - Senator Joanne Massiah is representing the prime minister and the minister of Finance at a two-day meeting convened by the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Georgetown, Guyana from May 30-31.

She is attending the Second Meeting of the Caribbean Development Round Table (CDR) and the Twenty-fourth Session of the Caribbean Development and Cooperation Committee (CDCC).

The CDR’s theme, “Macroeconomic Policy for Structural Transformation and Social Protection in Small States”, will engage ministers, academics, senior policy-akers and reiterated regional strategic thinkers in discussions on how Caribbean States can pursue their development aspirations and agendas in a more efficient, effective and realistic manner in the post global economic  crisis era.

Achieving these goals will require inter alia, a re-examination of the existing models for economic diversification and access to finance given the need to strengthen social protection programs to protect the vulnerable in our societies notwithstanding current fiscal constraints facing governments.

Issues addressing labour rights, improving productivity, child-sensitive protection policies and diversifying productive structures will also be addressed.

The CDCC session will allow ministers to examine the development challenges identified during the CDR as well as, issues addressing sustainable development which the region agrees is central to our broad development agendas.

The latter is particularly important given the convening of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development to be held in Brazil in June 2012. Ministers will also devise creative ways to better engage ECLAC’s support within the sub-region given the thrust towards greater south-south cooperation between the Caribbean and Latin America.

Presenters will include Winston Dookeran, Ashni Singh, Dr. Vanus James, Dr. Compton Bourne, Gabriel Porcile, Dr. Annicia Gayle-Geddes, Mr. Alec  Sanguinetti  and Dr. Andre.
