Sports Officials Meet with APUA

Sports Officials Meet with APUAAntigua St John's - A team of sports officials led by Minister of State with responsibility for Sports Winston Williams Jr met with APUA General Manager Esworth Martin and Electricity Manager Lyndon Francis following the island-wide disconnection of sporting facilities weekend.

The sports officials included Permanent Secretary Jessel Edward, Director of Sports Mervyn Richards and Co-ordinator of Planning Anne Jonas.

The minister of state said he has since formally responded to the general manager to confirm the ministry's agreement with recommendations which arose from the meeting. These included the following:

1. That a line of communication be established between APUA and the Ministry of Sports, through the creation of a working committee led by Francis.

2. That the working committee will review the draft memorandum of understanding between the Department of Sports and APUA to include the provision and management of utilities on sports and recreational facilities.

3. That all sporting facilities must restrict the lighting of their venues to the period of 6 to 10 pm, with immediate effect.

4.  That the Ministry of Sports will, as soon as possible, talk with all management groups on energy conservation mechanisms.

Senator Williams also said in his letter to the general manager that he was requesting that all sports venues which had been disconnected over the weekend be reconnected in good faith, as both parties continue their work toward an amicable resolution.

The meeting with the community-based management groups is expected to take place next Thursday. The venue and time are to be announced shortly.

What's the big deal

#9 It Is Me » 2012-05-17 19:10

All they have to do is put timers on the lights. Let the timer come on at 6pm and come off at 11pm (10pm might come off in the middle of games running late). They can also have controlls that can take them on and off also. But I can't understand how politicians and other executives get free electricity to go with their BIG salaries and APUA has no problem with that but they go after kids at a playing field. And who is paying to keep the lights on at the car park? They are lighting up an empty complex everyday and night.

IS this APUA,S SOLUTION??

#7 ANTIGUAN WOMAN » 2012-05-16 14:01

It is like someone wasting the entire day away then when the Sun starts to fade under the horizon, they rush outdoors to see what they can accomplish before the light fades completly.Apua has some more serious issues to address, cutting off/restricting the sporting complex will not solve their problem, take a stroll across Independence drive and look west of the Beautiful car park, you will see where a major problem lies, also,I thought the new Generators were to allow us to have reliable electricity at less usage to the Apua, why are they still spending even more moneys on Fuel,God never closes his eyes,he always knows the ways to reveal everything evil that happens in darkness.I have a generator and a few oil lamps, even i cant buy gas,my lamps will do,i have a feeling Apua and the Chinese Generators will come to a major collapse soon.Wickedness never pay.

@ Tenman - Longwinded

Tenman

Your comments are too long-winded. Your references are being overused. Honestly, whenever I see your comments, I gently by-pass them. I commend you on your ability to refer to past clips and posts, but Caribarena may have to place a restricition on your space.
However, there is a wanton waste of energy on all the fields and as such, there must be controls in place. APUA had to exercise this measure for us to be aware that the abuse must stop. We have a culture that if its govt, it must be wasted. Good move APUA, I await next the move.

JP the APUA chairman via yesterdays Daily Observer made it clear that he does not see the point in APUA being involved in any MOU. He stated its the customers responsibility to control costs not APUA:
Quote:
(Clavis) To comment on the minister’s statement is to be undiplomatic,” he began. “All I’m saying to you is APUA doesn’t own any playing field, and the people responsible for playing fields must regularise their own business.” see APUA chairman rebuffs sports minister By Shelton Daniel - Tuesday, May 15th, 2012.
JP is Clavis wrong?

Who put the lights out woof woof

#3 JP Farnsworth » 2012-05-16 08:26

Looks like everyone is in the dark about this. @Steve how is the UPP to blame I thought APUA was an ALP invention?
Lets see now, Govt owns the power plant and Govt owns APUA so who at APUA thought it would be a good idea to turn off the lights at a sports facility? Clearly this did not come to governments attention until someone with the tools to shut the lights thew the switch. If the lights go off APUA is responsible there is no passing the buck on this one.
