Antigua Receives $1.5 M for Improved Security

Minister of National Security Dr Errol Cort Antigua St John's - Minister of National Security Dr Errol Cort signed an $1,555,200 agreement between the US government and the Government of Antigua & Barbuda on Thursday that would see this country benefiting from several security-related initiatives.

Dr Cort said he was very pleased with the additional resources that will be injected into the country’s security forces as a result. “It will go a long way in further improving the capacity of our security forces to effectively manage the crime and security challenges and continue to maintain the country’s low crime rates," he said. "It will also help to further boost the morale within the security forces."

Key aspects of the project will include the purchase of equipment, training, and the mentoring of key law enforcement personnel.

Among the equipment the US intends to provide are vehicles, ballistic vests, video interview equipment, port security equipment, computer hardware, software and communications equipment. Personnel will also be trained as polygraphists, and the necessary polygraph capabilities will be provided.

Dr Cort said, “The Government of Antigua & Barbuda is very appreciative, and wishes to thank the Government of the United States of America for its generous donation and continued support to law enforcement agencies in the region."

The agreement is designed to enhance the government’s capacity to build stronger and more reliable criminal justice institutions, such as the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), the Royal Police Force, and Her Majesty’s Prison. Funds will also be used to expand the government’s capabilities to operate prisons and correctional centres that are safe and humane, and conform to internationally accepted standards.

While in Barbados, Dr Cort also signed another agreement with the United States. The Co-operative Sensor and Information Integration (CSII) Agreement was also signed on Thursday.

This deals with information sharing between the two parties in an effort to combat the illicit drug trade.

US POLICY

OUT OF ANTIGUA, refer to paragraphs 3 & 4. Note "...SECURITY FORCES"- in order of "...PRIORITY"- Military; ...ONDCP; ...Police." Now extended to "...Office of DPP and ...Prisons (paragraph 6).

As a matter of "...US POLICY," it does not provide actual cash. Recipients would submit list o requirements; ...it would make purchases from US markets; ...conduct training either in recipient countries or on its soil. This would be formalized by "...Handing over ceremonies."

Not sure how the author of the story got or perceived it, but the National Security Minister appeared to be expressing appreciation for its "...generosity to Law enforcement Agencies in the region" (paragraph 5).

Why not to Antigua and Barbuda as the story suggests?

A little for the seas?

Can we have a little bit of this money allocated to the Coast Guard so they may better patrol our oceans and prevent foreign overfishing of our waters, and destruction of our eco-system?
