EC1.3 Million for GARD Center

‪‬Union Injects over EC1.3 Million in GARD Center ProjectAntigua St. John's - The Gilbert Agricultural and Rural Development Centre (GARD) today announced the launch of a major project aimed at enhancing the income generating opportunities of vulnerable young women in Antigua
and Barbuda.

The project - the Empowerment of Young Women in Antigua and Barbuda in their Income Generation (YWEP)- has been made possible through a large grant of over EC$1.3 million ($380,002.54 EUR) from the European Union. This is one of the largest grants ever awarded from the European Union to an NGO in Antigua and Barbuda. The project is expected to have a two year life-span.

The YWEP will target over 200 vulnerable young women up to 35 years of age who find themselves unemployed or underemployed. According to the Executive Director of GARD Center, Roberta Williams: “Many of these women have not completed secondary school and will be provided with much needed vocational and entrepreneurial training allowing them the ability to better source jobs or set up their own enterprises.”

Other project objectives will bring attention to gender stereotyping in the vocational choices of women and in carrying out activities to encourage women to enter into the more male dominated employment and entrepreneurial areas. “As such, much of our training will focus heavily on preparing young women to enter the traditionally higher paying male areas.” says Williams. She further states: “We have already initiated courses in yacht maintenance, IT Repair and the driving of heavy duty equipment to name but a few.”

GARD Center will work with a number of institutions and business partners to provide internship and job placement opportunities for the graduates.

A critical component of the programme is the establishment of a Business Development Unit (BDU) in St. John’s, to assist persons who, after training, would like to start their own enterprises. Project Manager of the YWEP, Kareem Francis, says: “With the establishment of the BDU, individuals will now have an avenue and one-stop venue through which they can seek guidance in setting up businesses, access training and source funding through our arrangements with a number of cooperatives.”

The Board and staff of the GARD Center are truly grateful to the European Union for this invaluable partnership as it continues to equip the young women of Antigua and Barbuda with skills to make them more competitive in the global marketplace.

Common Cents, I would agree that education stretches far beyond Math and English. However, this would be a good start. Need I remind you of the passing rate of Math in your local exams. I believe that you have missed my point. As stated previously, the article indicated that the women have not completed secondary school. The blogger "Me" asked "isn't providing them with the basics, such as [Math] and [English] and the training educating them?" I retorted to "Me" that I did not see anything in the article about Math and English. I further opined that since the women did not have a basic education that Math and English should be an integral part of the program in order for the women to be successful.

Much respect!

FNSPR, education stretches far beyond maths and english. And I am 100% sure that whatever the skillsets necessary, that these will be incorporated into the training programmes.

Just my 2 cents

Me, welcome to the debate. According to the article, many of the women have not completed secondary school. I did not see anything about getting them up to speed in English and Math.. "Yacht repair" and "IT repair" might require those skill sets. Vocational training teaches one a skill and entrepreneurial training teaching one how to run a business. If one does not have a basic education, it seems to me that this education would be an integral part of the program in order for the women to succeed.

Much Respect!!

I don't understand what you mean by educating the women. Isn't providing them with the basics, such as math and english and the training educating them? What kind of "education" are you suggesting?

“Many of these women have not completed secondary school and will be provided with much needed vocational and entrepreneurial training allowing them the ability to better source jobs or set up their own enterprises.” Really? How about using some of the money to educate the women?

Great News!

#1 Common Cents » 2013-02-12 08:46

Great news! GARD Center does a lot of work in training and helping underprivileged individuals get into the workforce. However, since it is not one of the "hot topics" the work done by this and other organisations generally tends to slip under the radar. Continue working and keep up the good job!

On an aside, I would love to see some of this money (say, $100,000 or 10% of the funding) being set aside for micro loans so that these young people when they are finished their programs have some sort of financing with which to start their business. Micro loans often have a very high repayment rate and have been successful in many countries, and is a great way for the less well off to get vital funding to start their businesses!

Just my 2 cents!
