Dollar Barrel Is Back

Dollar Barrel Is BackAntigua St. John's - The Customs and Excise Division has finally announced that the Christmas barrel initiative will once again be implemented, beginning from December 1 to January 7.

Senior Customs personnel told the media on Thursday that the initiative takes the same form as 2011, with a $10 facilitation charge along with an additional 10 percent Revenue Recovery Charge (RRC) on barrels imported with food items, articles of clothing and commodities in non-commercial quantities.

“There is no duty or ABST ... just the $10 for documentation and handling,” said customs PRO Milton Aska.

Officer Stennette Knowles reemphasized that the consumer barrels could be filled to capacity with foodstuffs; but there are limitations on clothing, where only 7 of one particular item are allowed.

“That’s our way of trying to ensure that the barrel is being used for householders and not for persons trying to make a profit from it,” Knowles said.

Furthermore, it was reported that no Customs Broker is necessary for this initiative, as it is designed to be easier for consumers and to facilitate trade in a timely manner by eliminating the middleman.

The Customs Authority has designed a simplified form for consumers that further removes the need for assistance.

In order for consumers to qualify under the initiative, imported barrels must reach the island within the time period outlined.

“We are going to have designated officers just to facilitate the movement of the barrels while the other officers will be deployed to deal with the commercial activities,” the officers said.

A maximum of two individuals will be allowed to examine any barrel, and at no time would more than 100 people be allowed at the port in general, as part of new Port Authority security measures.

When it was implemented it was called a dollar barrel because that was all you had to pay. Now that the the cost will be 10.00 + 10% of the value, its time to call it ten dollar plus 10 percent barrel

Why are you people fixated on it being called dollar barrel? They never said it was a one dollar barrel. So even if it cost ten dollars it is still dollar barrel. It is not as a big faux pas as asking for a dollar bread when the price has actually jumped to $1.75.

What Dollar Barrel???

#5 Wadalian » 2012-11-30 14:08

This is far less than a stitch in time! You pay far more than $10.00, it actually approximately $50.00 in total for the so called dollar barrel. Besides that, the time given is usually from November 15/16 (for the barrels to arrive in Antigua) and they waited until now to tell us that it's available. Families who went to clear last week were told that they have to pay the full sum for their barrel because no dollar barrel is in effect. The government, as usual, is making rings around us and we should become accustomed to this by now. Only God is keeping us.

This is certainly good news to hear that the Dollar Barrel is back and, this time, the process will be less painful.
Well done and thank you for the Christmas gift!

Yup, the yearly bribe for future votes has surfaced again. Just make Antigua & Barbuda duty free and you'll see how the economy grows, for EVERYONE, not just SOME. :-|
