Egg Prices Go Up From Saturday

Egg Prices Go Up Antigua St. John's - Come December 1, a case of one-dozen eggs in Antigua & Barbuda will cost $2.50 more than at present.

This is because the cost of production has gone up locally, and the restriction of imports by major supermarkets has created quite a problem for consumers, who may now need to stock up for any increased uses of egg they may have during the Christmas season.

Manager of the Epicurean Fine Foods, Antigua’s largest supermarket business, Richard Buoni, said there is not much of a choice for either consumers or suppliers at this point, since the market dictates that the price hike is necessary.

He explained that the Epicurean adds only a 20 percent markup on the eggs, and as such its recovery costs are minimal. “We don’t have much of a choice in the matter. We cannot import eggs. You need a license and we don’t have one,” Buoni said.

He added, “The price has gone up and the market is established.”

The price change takes effect from December 1 when a new shipment comes in for the Christmas season.

President of the Antigua and Barbuda Agriculture Corporate Society, Valerie Edwards, last night declined to make any further comment on the matter.

Caribarena understands that a press release on the matter which was issued earlier by the Poultry Association has since been withdrawn.

It was not immediately clear if this is because the price increases are being reconsidered.

Production breakdown I'd needed

#13 Dig It » 2012-11-29 11:48

What I would like to see is a "break-down" in the cost of "egg-production " locally to determine why prices are going up? Or, it is a matter of "drought" or more "modern" equipments that is affecting production? The Poultry Association needs to be more open in that regards.

RE: Egg Prices Go Up From Saturday

Considering that I pay around 90 cents for a dozen large eggs in NYC, the $4.00 US per dozen, for locally produced eggs in Antigua is outrageous.

The $12 dollar pineapple, $16 per gallon gas, the $26 hamburger, and all of the other overpriced consumer goods in Antigua are a direct result of trying to maintain a political system that pays the Prime Minister more than the Vice President of the United States, and Senators that don't even live on the island. The outdated tax system that not only allows the overpaid and useless politicians to avoid paying any taxes, but also the most profitable businesses on the island, the overpriced hotels, pay zero tax on millions and millions in profits. The excessively high tariff needed to maintain this bloated, inefficient and unsustainable political/tax system is guaranteed to keep a large percentage of the population below the poverty level.

Understand this, eggs are perishable, they don't have a shelf life. All people have to do is not buy, are you going to put a gun to their heads and order them to buy?. When you set price for goods, first order of business is shelf like, hopefully the stores have a policy of returning goods that do not sell and they get stuck with all these eggs.

“The worse consumers are the uninformed consumers.” It is unfortunate that the price of eggs is going up. It is also unfortunate that some of you hide behind anonymity, pretend to be smart and savvy and say the things you say. The same computer that you view and write these malicious comments can be used to gather information on what is trending the poultry industry in the Caribbean and the wider world. Two months ago, the price of all poultry products in Jamaica went up by over 30%. Just “Google” the price of chicken or chicken feed, and you will be amazed at what you see…

I am also as surprised as everyone else for this increase again before christmas AGAIN becuase if my memory served me right I think it went up just before christmas a year or so back but..

1. International feed (Poultry) prices have been soaring high for the past few years.

2. Eggnog, pastries, cakes (wow my fruit-cake, damn it)..expect the dominoe effect for the christmas or new years.

3. @ General Deputy..the initial chicken comes from the egg but I see your point were one or more chicken will produce more on your returns.

4. Mr. Minister of Finance and WIOC from since the last SO-CALLED price drop for gas in Antigua, which was almost a year ago. The prices for gas on the international markets had plunged down many times over and Antigua had received over 4 shipment of oil/gas from since. How is it that the oil/gas prices haven't continued to drop in Antigua due to the factors above.

Free up the fowl market

#6 Barry » 2012-11-29 09:07

Time to let the free market determine the price of poultry! The Antigua and Barbuda Poulty Association (ABPA) is acting like another entity (APUA), the only game in town. Let the supermarkets and wholesalers bring in poultry products at least for the christmas season.

25% Increase is too much on poor people

#2 Fireworks » 2012-11-29 06:48

Notwithstanding ,... a 25% hike in anything, including egg prices does seem a bit excessive at this time.
Who determines how much egg should cost and when and how the prices are raised?? Could the Poultry Association just arbitrarily just increase the price of egg from $9.60 to $15.00 just so?... if yes, why do we even bother to vote for a Government.
PM Spencer, hope to hear your thoughts on controlling this massive increase.
