Antigua and Barbuda to Observe Public Service Day

Public Service DayAntigua St. John’s – A week of activities will be held to commemorate Public Service Day on June 23.

The activities are being organized by the Department of Public Administration in the Ministry of Finance the Economy and Public Administration and will include a Church Service, an appearance on the Monday Night Live Programme on ABS TV, a Media Day, and an Open Forum to discuss whether “The Public Service can be an employer of First Choice”.

The celebrations will also include a Street Fair where the various ministries and departments will be showcasing what they do.

The week climaxes with an Awards Banquet where persons will be recognised for their outstanding contribution to the public service.

A release from the Ministry of Finance said from 2002, the United Nations General Assembly designated June 23 of each year as United Nations Public Service Day and encouraged member states to organise special events to highlight the contribution of the public service in the development process.

And as such, the day was created to celebrate the value and virtue of public service to the community; highlight the contribution of public service in the development process; recognise the work of public servants; and encourage young people to pursue careers in the public sector.

It also recognizes that democracy and successful governance are built on the foundation of a competent civil service.

This year’s observance is being held under the theme “Building a Public Service that Works for You”.

why do you need a whole week of activities, spending money the country does not have just to celebrate one Day? Carnival is right around the corner, can't we wait?
