Govt Shares Housing Plans

Minister harold LovellAntigua St John's - The government plans to inject millions into the construction industry through more housing and other construction projects, Finance Minister Harold Lovell said at a UPP rally in All Saints on Tuesday.

The minister said the UPP will also inject millions into roads and other building initiatives, through funding available from OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries), an intergovernmental organisation of 12 oil-producing countries.

The loan, a portion of which is still being negotiated, comes as Antigua & Barbuda clears up a series of back debt, Lovell said. Negotiations for the funds were concluded recently in Washington DC.

“They (OPEC) have now said that now that Antigua and Barbuda is back on a firm path, and we have proper disciplined and visionary leadership… they have said that they are going to assist us with infrastructural work," the minister said. “This will create jobs for our people right here in Antigua and Barbuda."

He added that several new housing initiatives are to begin in the coming months, including one undertaken by contractor Miles Codrington - brother of Housing Minister Chanlah Codrington, in Lightfoot.

The housing aspect of this spending initiative comes on the heels of two similar projects undertaken by the government through the Central Housing And Planning Authority (CHAPA) and the Ministry of Agriculture - the North Sound and Follies housing projects.

One project lost its contractor over alleged non-payment after the first phase, and the other due to complaints from its targeted buyers that the pricing was out of reach. The government had proposed that the homes in the North Sound development be available primarily to public servants.

Efforts to secure an update on the status of both projects recently proved futile.

Meanwhile, Minister Lovell said on Tuesday that just last week, himself, Prime Minister Spencer and others agreed over a meal with new investors to the construction and operation of a major factory in Antigua that would produce construction material.

In addition, the investor also proposes to construct a housing development project through a joint venture with the government.

“That's going to be more construction work again,” Lovell said.

Why not reduce the housing projects you already have so that it will be affordable for all of us, before wasting money to build more again

Very few people can afford to purchase a house in these present times. After the construction jobs then where do we go from there??? If government cannot get this tourism plant turned around in quick time lots of new houses will be on the market for a very very long time along with those the banks would have foreclosed on.

I tend to look the other way when King Lyad opens his mouth. Guess elections are coming. UPP will now find the way to do all the things that have escaped them for the past 8 years.

I was reminded today that someone needs to ask Lovell what happened to the investors who were to take over Brewing Wadadli beer?

Quote:
Antigua St John's - The government is putting its full backing behind moves by two different groups to establish a brewery in Antigua. This comes as the government has apparently abandoned efforts to assist with securing a buyer for the Antigua Brewery Ltd (ABL) since its owners, a group out of the Dominican Republic, is reportedly asking too much for a plant said to be over 70 years old. Finance Minister Harold Lovell said the government will instead encourage the establishment of an alternative brewery. The government had hoped for the purchase of ABL after the Dominican Republic company announced plans to close the plant at Crabbes and move operations to St Vincent and the Grenadines. Operating expenses are too high in Antigua to attract any serious manufacturing facilities. The Zacky Mann project is pie in the sky, with land demands, and the utilities required I don’t see that happening. Only the mongoose population will be disappointed if the Zacky Man project is dead.

The dictionary deffinition of the word LIAR should be changed and a picture of Harald Lovell be used as the definition. This man is a compulsive liar. Can you believe Lovell has the gall to talk about the housing project at Follies? Not one house has been sold, and Good Friday will fall on a Tuesday before these houses are sold. That was just another of the UPP's dirty deals and will always be a debt to Antiguans. Now they are talking about other projects. Why not just sell Antiguans the lands and let them build their own homes? This is what we are accustomed to. Lovell, is Antigua on good financial footing when you still cannot pay wages on a weekly basis? Give me a brieak, LIAR!!!!

I take it that Zackie/Mann is now history? Truly strange how these guys spout unfeasible projects and disrespect the public's intelligence. Lovell now speaks of housing projects when current government ones have seemingly failed. He then suggests we will have a company here building construction material, when existing manufacturers are being killed by costs like the high electricity rates. The PM promises a fix for the high utility rates and is then publicly corrected, during the blood and wine press conference, by the APUA GM who tells him Oil prices make this impossible. The unsaid truth is the key to any success manufacturing it Antigua will require APUA being made efficient. Unfortunately in the short term, this will call for politically unpalatable job cuts.
