Pet Lovers Support Dog Show

Monique-an-her-Rasta-dogs-winner-Fancy-dressAntigua St John's - The third annual Antigua dog show, held at Springhill Riding Stables in Falmouth, attracted about 600 people over the weekend, with almost 100 dogs entered into various competitions.

Organiser Joy Farrell was pleased to see attendance double from last year, and used the event to ensure animal issues were addressed.

Farrell collected signatures to present to the prime minster to re-enforce the laws on animal abuse. “I got over 120 so far and will be in town to collect some more in the near future,” she said.

Meanwhile, an information booth from Protect Antiguan Animals with a Smile (PAAWS) made sure visitors understood what they had come to support.

The grounds looked very festive with Pedigree flags and various stalls. There were child activities like archery, steeple race, crafts, pony rides, and face painting.

The two arenas for the dog competitions were well set up, especially arena one where judge Shonnie Beach ruled. Her job was to determine which dog was the most agile on the obstacle course. and she also had a canine "good citizenship" competition.

During the agility test, each dog had to jump over bars, jump onto a table, and sit for five counts, then walk over two different ramps and crawl through a tunnel. There were categories for small, medium, and large dogs.

Meanwhile, the canine good citizenship competition determined which dog was friendliest around strangers and other dogs gentle and not easily scared. Beach would pop open and umbrella or bring an electric toothbrush close to the dogs to gauge their reaction. Brushing their coat, touching the dogs' paws and having them sit, stay, and come when called were also part of the test. Judge Beach was in the arena for almost five hours, and did an amazing job.

Arena two drew a big crowd when judge Fiona Francis (veterinarian) and Linda Anderson had to pick the cutest puppy. Condition of the pups and their movement were the criteria for this competition. Four-month-old Fifi, a mixed Antiguan breed, won. Poppy-George-and-Fifi-winner-of-cutest-pup

Owner Poppy and her brother George were thrilled. Poppy explained they had found Fifi on the streets and taken her in. The youngsters couldn’t believe their dog had won first prize. Farrell pointed out that this was what the dog show was all about - to let people know that all dogs are winners and great friends.

The fancy dress competition was colourful, and some dogs wore very original costumes. Monique’s German shepherd family won first prize as Rasta dogs. A black pit bull drew a lot of laughs while bumping a balloon with his nose and jumping behind it in the best trick category. Last year’s winner, Dan, an Antiguan mixed breed, managed to steal the crown again for best dog in show.

Dan-winner-best-in-showSecond and third place winners were Coco, a mixed breed, and Scruffy a Golden Retriever. Cutest Dog in Antigua went to Reggie, and runner-up was Kong. The agility course winners for small, medium, and large dogs were Fuella, Rasta Man, Kissy; medium dogs Omfazi, Rosie, and Cocoa; and large dogs, Dan, Suzie, and Billy Bob.

Pedigree provided all the prizes, which included dry and canned dog food, scoopers, and dog bowls.

Organisers were very pleased with the way the day turned out, and thanked all their sponsors and volunteers for their support and time. Farrell was not yet sure how much money had been raised, but said it was definitely more than last year.

Don't listen to this nonsense from civilised countries. It is our god given right as Antiguan's to chain up, beat, starve and poison dogs.

As for getting our dogs neutered, its an offense to our manhood and would make us less manly if our dogs were castrated. I feel a real man when I know my dog goes out impregnating all the **es in the area! I know this increases the stray dog population but we keep that under control by running them over in our cars.

YES, I am a REAL Antiguan MAN because I know how to treat dogs!

The penalty for bypassing this law is usually having your pet confiscated and quarantined for six months at the pet owners expense or refusal of entry into Antigua.

Taliban, are you suggesting, that the law doesn't exist, or that it isn't adhered to? I can tell you, it does exist and it is strict. I went through the process on 2 different occasions. I don't know the penalties for "bypassing" this law, maybe someone who had the experience could fill me in.

@ Taliban I used to work for the government vet that is how I know, here are the rules for importing animals into Antigua: http://www.antigua-barbuda.org/Import%20Requirements%20for%20importing%20pets.pdf

PAAWS does benefit society because it picks up dogs off the street that lazy owners don't feed, care for or get neutered.

@ Taliban last time I checked Antigua has very strict rules on importing cats and dogs, and is also rabies free. All cats and dogs imported into Antigua have to be vaccinated against rabies and have to have a blood test done to prove that they are rabies free, so what does this have to do with anything?

Dog show does benefit animal rescue such as PAAWS, because a portion of the money raised goes towards this rescue organisation. PAAWS helps rescue many abandoned, neglected and abused animals.

:D Help, are you for real? You want statistics on our stray dog problem? Take a look around you. Any dog, that is roaming the streets, going through your garbage, or impregnating your female dog without your permission, is a stray dog. Whether there is an owner or not.
Taliban, if you are a responsible dog owner, then your dog stays in your fenced yard and is up to date with its shots. Don't breed your ** unless you have homes for the puppies. There you have it. Stray dog and rabies problems solved.

The rabies virus travels to the brain by following the peripheral nerves. Once the rabies virus reaches the central nervous system and symptoms begin to show, the infection is effectively untreatable and usually fatal within days.
Overall, roughly 97% of human rabies cases come from dog bites.[3] In the United States, however, beast control and vaccination programs have effectively eliminated domestic dogs as reservoirs of rabies.[

Any beast control and vaccination programs currently existing within the "pet lovers club"? If not, are there plans to implement such a program? Any organization has a responsibility to meet its goals, BUT also to do its part in improving society. What about the possibility of partnering with the Humane Society?
So for one day the dog lover get a "high" until next year? What are the plans for the rest of the year? Educate the public! Undertake other dog-related projects or try to obtain meaningful data about these pets in society. DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT

How does half a nation dressing up in skimpy to nonexistent clothes , and girating through the streets of St. John's for several days, benefit society. People just like to do it. I don't see much connection to Emancipation anymore. Funny that you quoted Lionman on stray dogs.
If we had responsible dog owners throughout Antigua, we would not have a stray dog problem. I guess thats one of Joy's gripes. Don't just dump your dog , because your kid lost interest or he can't fight, or maybe he is not as aggressive as you expected him to be.

That's an excellent idea lionman. Something the organizers should think about. I mean how does dressing a dog up in rasta hats benefit society? Degrading a person's religion to the canine level? What next? a crucifix around the dog's neck?

If they have any shred of decency left in them, they would seriously revamp or eradicate this whole "circus" event.

Another Westernized value being adopted when will Antiguans and others learn that adapting or assimilating to dominant culture's values and ways can become detrimental to our own values and way of life. Keep chasing Babylonian ways. Instead of doing all these dog shows, why don't they conduct procedures in the number of disease stray dogs running around Antigua and Barbuda. Since I was a youth there have been stray dogs running around chasing people and trashing the streets with rubbish. It is a true eye sore to see these stray dogs taking over certain areas. I am not saying adopting certain activities from other cultures is not good but we have to basically consider what is beneficial to our culture and society. The next minute you will have Antiguan women carrying them small dogs under them and have them in their beds like Westerners. Lest be conscientious of what we are willing adapt into our culture.

This is Antigua, not the U.S. You have any statistics for here? All this over a dog show? Do you want me to discontinue the heartworm tablets, and distribute clean needles and syringes in St.John's? Or do you want me to sponsor a couple of Crossroads sessions? People have choices, dogs don't. The choice lies solely with the owner.

What about people who TRULY CANNOT afford to find a job and/or take care of themselves???

Quote:
Americans care about pets more than ever today. Nearly two-thirds - 63 percent - of households have a pet, and pet lovers spent $38.5 billion on their pets in 2006, up from $21 billion a decade earlier. According to the Census Bureau, in the last decade, the percentage of homes with pets has remained relatively stable, but the amount of money people spend on pets has doubled. We spend several billion dollars more on dog and cat food than on baby food. According to Bob Vetere, the president of the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association, 42 percent of pets sleep in the same bed as their owners - up from 34 percent in 1998. I found no statistic saying what percentage of people share their beds with other humans, but it's obvious that pets are catching up.

@ Bumper too, the difference with people and animals is that people can actually go find a job and care and fend for themselves, animals can't they rely on humans to take care of them. Maybe some of the " so called pet lovers" love their pet more than people because many people are conceited and selfish, dog love unconditionally no matter how you treat them.

Doesn't it pain you to see how some human beings are treated right here in Antigua? Why don't you feel this way for vagrants and the less fortunate PEOPLEin society. This is really an "Americanized" way of thinking. Putting an animal on equal level with a human being and in some cases above a human being. God gave man dominion over animals. Animals should not be mistreated, but if SOME so-called pet lovers would devote even HALFthe amount of time, care, love and attention to actual HUMAN BEINGS, then what a much better world it would be.

The Bible said to love your neighbour as yourself, NOT your PETS. Americans act like dogs are more valuable than human life. They are not!

And look at the hat you have those dogs wearing? I have to get King Frank-I's opinion on that

My 130lb Rottweiler is outside in the day, but sleeps in the house at night. On the rare occasion that he barks at night, I know that it is serious enough for me to get out of bed. I treat him with respect , walk him twice everyday, feed him quality dog food , not leftover scraps from the table, take him for his shots, worm tablets every month. And in return, should the need arise, he will give his life to protect me and my family.
I don' think you could expect the same commitment from a dog, that spends his whole life on a chain outside. Last year a chained dog in my neighborhood died of malnutrition. It took the owner 3 days to realise, that his dog was dead. Makes me wonder, how often that dog got fed...

@ Bumber Too, A dog ain't a thing, it's a warmblooded living creature with a fairly large brain and the ability to express feelings and emotions.
A dog can be man's best friend if you treat it right. You don't have to be caucasion, to figure that out. just give it a try, you might end up with a good friend and protection at the same time.

While I share your sentiments about dressing up dogs or any animals for that matter, I totally disagree with you on your point, that a dog's place has to be outside. Dogs kept outside are usually "allerting" their owners all night long, which keeps the whole neighborhood awake unnecessarily. Dogs kept outside usually "communicate" with other dogs kept outside, and of course with all the stray dogs too, which renders them useless, since they are basically barking all night long to a point, where no one takes them serious anymore.

Dogs stay OUTSIDE

#6 Snoop Dogg » 2012-02-07 18:28

The truth is that majority of Antiguans view dogs as a means of protection (hence the reason they are kept outside the house). Maybe one day the Americanized habit of dressing up dogs in clothes and hats will catch on, but as for now a dogs place is outside the house to alert the owner of anyone coming to/passing by the property.
