Antigua & Barbuda’s oldest living person, Irene Carlos, celebrated her 110th birthday on Monday at the Fiennes Institute among family, friends, and government officials.
The plucky centenarian danced during her birthday celebration, and was all smiles as a cake saying “110 And Still Batting” was presented in her honour.
Among the guests at the celebration were Governor General Dame Louise Lake-Tack, Minister of Health Wilmoth Daniel, Director of the Community Development Division Brenda Thomas-Odlum, and members of the Freetown community.
During the party, Carlos requested three of her favourite hymns: “Blessed Assurance,” “God, Our Help in Ages Past,” and “To God Be the Glory”.
She was born in Freetown on January 23, 1902, the eldest of three children, and was often called upon to take care of her siblings, a task she carried on throughout her life.
Although Carlos never married or had any children, she raised two nieces and a nephew after their mother died when they were still young.
An excellent cook – demonstrating exceptional culinary skills from her youth - Carlos’ favourite meal to prepare, and eat, is fungie and pepperpot.
She took up a career within the culinary field, and worked until age 65 at the Mill Reef Club.

LORD have mercy ON MY NATION!!!!
This is a reflection on our society- new cars: substandard homes; no value on education:poor social and physical infrastructure; nice brand name clothing and shoes: no savings in the banks. Totally misguided values permeate the Antiguan society. So I don't why am surprised.
