Antigua St John's - Women Who Care are Janda Spinks and Christine Williams from the UK and Hanna Pinsent from Canada. Janda and Christine live on the South of the island and Hanna spends 6 months of year here in Antigua.
They have been selling second hand books outside Epicurean in Jolly Harbour every first Saturday in the month for the last 3 years.
For the first year the monies raised was given solely to SANDS Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Society and is now donated to various charities and local causes.
Those that have benefitted are the Salvation Army, the Youth Sailing Programme in Jolly Harbour who provide free sailing lessons to local children, a family in Urlings and Johnsons Point whose houses burnt down, Tindall Seven Day Adventist Church Community Services, an employee of Epicurean with a brain tumour and the Mental Hospital. Their aim is to provide financial help to local people.
As well as raising funds for various causes Women Who Care also provide a service to those people on the island who love to read and they have regular customers each month who not only buy the books but donate them as well.
In June last year Women Who Care met Agnes Meeker who is heading the restoration of the Gwyneth Riley wing of the Holberton hospital which will become the St Johns Hospice. Janda and Christine volunteered to visit patients in their homes and they then realised how necessary a hospice is to the island to provide palliative care to people who so desperately need it. So this year all their fund raising efforts will dedicated to St Johns Hospice.
They decided that they needed to step up their fund raising and have started organising Craft Fairs. These are held at Jolly Harbour and also provide the opportunity for traders to sell their crafts.
