Antigua St. John's - Her knowledge of the annual Island Scholar award was quite limited when she entered the Antigua State College in 2010; but that proved no deterrent to her winning the prestigious award in 2012.
The title earned her a place among the list of awardees in the Education category at the just concluded National Youth Award Ceremony; she was honoured for being named Island scholar.
Adia Crump’s brilliance was no secret as it trailed her from the Sunnyside Tutorial School to the Antigua Girls High School; where she maintained a place in the top 10, from second to fifth form.
While maintaining excellent grades she played netball from second to fifth form and was a member of the Antigua Girls High and Antigua Grammar Schools’ Interactive Club.
With each form came more work, maturity and a greater level of responsibility. So in third form she became a part of the Junior Achievement Program and in fifth form the art of time management was developed; having to study for school and external exams at once.
“I made study schedules and dedicated a particular amount of time to each subject,” she said.
The method worked, since Adia was successful in all eight subjects she sat; grades one in mathematics, English, principles of accounts, principles of business, information technology, office administration and social studies and grade a two in biology.
Once the results were read, Crump said she was elated.
“The night before the results came out I was very nervous and because I had to wait a while at school before I collected it, I became even more nervous. Finally the secretary told me my results and I was so excited, I was satisfied,” she said.
Having successfully completed her secondary school education, her journey would next see her entering the Antigua State College.
Her eyes were never set on being named Island Scholar; but her hard work, discipline and determination to excel earned her the award.
“It’s not that I had set out to get it. It just happened. My CAPE grades were excellent and from that point on I knew I was a strong contender for the award. At first I really didn’t know much about it but once I realised it was a possibility for me to get it, I hoped and prayed and it happened.”
Being named Island Scholar means Adia has been granted a full time government scholarship to any university of her choice.
She is currently studying Accounts and Finance; her career goal is to become a professional accountant.
Adia’s extra-curricular activities include being a member of the University and College Campus Fellowship and serving as one of the treasurers.
The newest member of Island Scholar Club says her parents Bernadette Merchant-Joseph and Aldin Crump are extremely supportive.
“I am thankful to God for them. They have never stopped supporting me. They have always believed in me, even when I didn’t believe in myself.”
The young woman also expressed thanks to God for providing her tuition.
“I don’t have to worry about tuition because God has already provided. He has truly favoured me.”
She will commence studies at the Cave Hill Campus in Barbados in 2013.
