Antigua st. John's - The past unfurls as parallel stories depicting the history of Antigua & Barbuda with displays of creative designs –streamed with National Flag and madras at Ministry of Social Transformation.
The woman behind the decoration Ms. Maudlyn Phillip described the display as “a shadow of the past.”
Phillip said, for the past 13 years, she has tried to retain the stories of olden days’ through her displays and decoration during the period of independence in an effort to sensitize the public of how things were made from scrap and other metals.
On display, multi –coloured rug, thatched roof house, necklace and other art/ crafts, and crochet materials- all of which she made from scrap materials.
Phillip of Tindale Road explained that, she became a handy person from a tender age, when she would accompany her father to various metal and carpenter shops.
“I would watch the men as the work at the joiner and carpenter shop, and practice making them on my own,” she said.
She said, now the house on display is being built of scrap material from a Joiner at Tindale Road, the bed made of straws and cotton and pieces of woods bind together for the steeple.
Philip noted further that all these historic pieces were made by her single-handedly.

Philip, is an employee, is employed in the Registry Department in the Ministry of Social Transformation and assists the Citizens Welfare Division during their summer camp to teach art and craft.
She said, all the pieces on display were taught to other children, as a means of sustainability.
Ms. Philip is also trained by the United Nations Children Education Fund in Early childhood Education.
The decoration and display at the Ministry of Social Transformation co-incide with the 31st Independence Celebration which is ongoing under the theme “Antigua & Barbuda: One Family Uniting for a Cleaner, Greener and More Productive Nation”
