Antigua St John's - Past Guides have taken on a topiary project in celebration of 100 years of guiding. Topiary is the art of creating sculpture in the medium of clipped trees, shrubbery, and vines. Making it possible is well-known topiarist Joe Kyte, better known as “Topiary Joe”.
"Topiary Joe," originally from Oak Ridge, Tennessee, is creating a Trefoil Topiary depicting the Antigua& Barbuda Girl Guide logo, which is the Antigua Black Pineapple & Girl Guide logo. It will be erected on the grounds of Girl Guides Headquarters on Deanery Lane, facing Dickenson Bay Street.
“Topiary Joe” has built giant planted topiary animals, living logos, public art work, and giant steel wire green sculptures worldwide. He has also created large-scale 3D sustainable advertising sculptures across the Caribbean.
It did not take much to convince Topiary Joe, a man who loves adventure and fishing, to pack his bags and come to Antigua to volunteer his services to the Past Guides project.
He is donating his time and talent on a three-week working vacation made possible by contributions from the private sector.
Past Guides have sourced meals, transportation, building material and “good ole” Antiguan hospitality to make the Trefoil Topiary Project a reality.
Contributors to the Trefoil Topiary project include Builders Merchant, Leslie Whyte, Jason Brodie, Epicurean Fine Foods & Pharmacy, Milton Benjamin & Susan Lowes, Bargain Centre Hardware, Burt Trimingham, Multi Tech Engineering, A&A Sails, AMW Welding, Arlene Murdoch-DeSilva, and Lics Ltd.
Girl Guiding started in the UK in 1910 and Girl Scouting started in the USA in 1912. The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts continue a three-year (2010-2012) centenary celebration with a focus for each year - Plant, Grow, and Share, respectively.

While the current members of the Girl Guides Association of Antigua & Barbuda have been celebrating through various activities since 2010, the past/inactive Guides will now join in the celebrations with Topiary Joe. Contributions to the project are welcome. For more information, contact 773-5870 or check out Topiary Joe’s downloadable catalogue at
