I cannot begin to imagine what it feels like to lose every single you have spent all your life working hard to achieve - your home and all your possessions.
Worse if you don’t have insurance, or if you lose a loved one or friend to a fire.
Recently in the news, and despite the best efforts of the fire department and other non-profit organizations to educate the populous, the number of house fires in the country have been on the increase. The one thing they all agree on is that the best way to practice fire safety is to prevent a fire from occurring in the first place. Here are a few measures that can be taken to do just that:
1. Always be aware of potential fire hazards in your home. Check all your electrical appliances, outlets and extension cords and ensure that they are in good condition and that they meet acceptable standards. Have all electrical projects done and checked by a trained electrician.
2. Do not run electrical wires under rugs.
3. Use child safety outlet covers if there are young children in the house.
4. Ensure that night-lights, lamps etc. do not touch fabrics of any sort.
5. Store matches where children cannot reach them.
6. Turn pot handles inwards and do not leave cooking unattended.
7. Do not leave lit candles unattended.
8. Purchase smoke detectors for every room and maintain them regularly.
9. Plan and practice an escape route with your family so that you can get out quickly and safely if a fire does break out.
