Interest in the 2009 Home Families and Garden Festival (HFGH) continues to heighten as several new registration forms have been collected and distributed, less than two weeks after the festival was officially launched.

According to information from the organizers, over 500 copies of the official entry forms, including rules for gardening and criteria for judging, have been distributed to community groups, service organizations, social clubs and church groups both in Antigua and the sister-isle of Barbuda.  Last year, approximately 65 persons participated in the event.

The festival is being spearheaded by the Community Development Division (CDD) which has reported numerous calls from the public about this year’s event.

The late Governor Baldwin introduced the HFGF in 1951 to enhance villages and communities on the island.  Although the festival died for several years, last year the CDD successfully revived the event.  

Last year, the work of Mrs. LoAnn Hector of Briggins Estate was acknowledged for Best Flower Garden; while Ms. Vaughn Samuel of Cedar Valley Gardens received the Mixed Garden prize.  Residents on Barbuda were also included in the last year’s program and Charlesworth Williams captured first place for Best Flower Garden, while McChesney George High School was awarded Best Mixed Garden.

The judges of the competition will award marks for general appearance, health & vigour, proper use of space, most innovative (design), layout, landscaping design, house maintenance and organic practices.

The CDC is asking that all entry forms be submitted by October 16th, as an adjudication exercise will be conducted in November and December.
