As a child growing up, and even to this day, one of the things that I often look forward to getting my hands, and most definitely my mouth on, was a nice, ice-cold "suck-a-bubby". In some circles it is referred to as ice-pop, popsicle, or ice-lolly.
In Antigua, we call it simply suck-a-bubby, or even frozen joy, and that it is indeed!
It was usually an incentive for good behaviour, and often served up on the weekend, especially on those long, hot days of summer.
A suck-a-bubby is simply frozen fruit juice or other flavoured liquid placed in a small, clear plastic bag. Some of the tray ladies, vendors, and housewives make some very exciting flavours like coconut, sorrel, lemon, banana, and my favorite, soursop. There were also always the Kool-Aid-flavoured ones which were less expensive than the fruit-filled nutritious ones with milk and cinnamon and all the other exciting things.
They also used to run out really soon, so you either had to place your order before the soursop or the coconut suck-a-bubby was even made, or be the first to show up when it was ready for sale.
When the same juices are placed in one and two ounce cups, we call them ice-pops. These were for the more "prim and proper" people who did not firmly grasp the fine Antiguan art of nipping off just the right amount of plastic end from the suck-a-bubby and suckling on the rest of the plastic bag to get the incomparable delight of the cold, frozen joy inside.
