Antiguan Chef Promoted at Sandals

Lydia-GeorgeAntigua St John's - For 20 years, Lydia George has been honing her cooking skills at Sandals Grande Antigua Resort & Spa. George began her career in the culinary field as a cook, and was recently promoted to Senior Chef de Partie.

The friendly and humble Antiguan knows the ins and outs of the hospitality industry, and has witnessed the dramatic changes at the resort over the past two decades.

When asked about what the promotion meant to her, George said, “I am very proud and honoured, and I am going to do my best to set an example for the young chefs so that they understand the importance of hard work and dedication.”

George is admired and highly respected by her colleagues, who say she is the heart of their kitchen. Their sentiments were echoed by General Manager Gerald Christ, who said,

“Lydia is such a joy to be around, and she has a phenomenal work ethic that inspires other team members. Leaders like her are hard to find, so we must acknowledge their accomplishments and celebrate their successes.”

The cooking skills of George have been noticed by Emmy Award winning Celebrity Chef Walter Staib who recently visited Antigua to scout for locations for his TV show, “A Taste of History”.

Staib handpicked George to share some of her best recipes with him so that they can be showcased on his show.
George is passionate about her craft and takes great pleasure in ensuring that everyone enjoys the food they consume.

I worked with this woman for seven yrs at the at the time Sandals Antigua Resorts & Spa...She was the most down to earth person with an amazing personality, needless to say an Amazing Chef. I am not at all surprised by this promotion, i am pleased at the coverage, and believe that even more is deserved. I hope that she is equally well compensated. Lydia is a hard working woman who provided and always spoke about her family. I am proud of you, you deserve every bit of success....

20 years?

#11 Jerry » 2011-06-01 14:15

So she takes 20 years to make supervisor and the hotel proudly displays this as a headline/accomp lishment? This is an insult to all the hard working hotel workers who have been sidestepped in favour of Europeans whom they have to train to do their jobs and who are made the Executive Chef. I see no big headlines here but what I see is advantage!

when i say the headline i thought Ms. George was promoted to a Sous Chef. After 20 years all Sandals could do is give her a supervisor position?????. Come on we have worked to long in this industry and not being recognized. Am sure her boss is a young jamaican!!!
Antiguans are coming back from culinary school with experience and training, the labour department needs to stop granting work permits for positions that Antiguans can do.
