Antigua St John's - This year's Mango Fest was launched over the weekend at the Urlings Fisheries Complex during the annual seafood fest.
The Ministry of Tourism hosted the launch, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture.
Chairman Caudley George commended his committee members for work well done, and said he is looking forward to the public's continued support.
Minister of Agriculture Hilson Baptiste said, “Antigua is on the move with agriculture, and I'm committed to doing anything that is possible to ensure that the farmers have what they need for producing the food to cut down on the importing bill."
He noted that pineapple production had expanded tremendously, and would continue to do so, to meet overwhelming demand.
Dr Jacqui Quinn-Leandro, who spoke on behalf of the prime minister, gave full endorsement to the Mango Fest. She expressed the prime minister's best wishes for another successful and enjoyable seafood fest and a successful Mango Fest 2012.
She noted, “For many years, we have heard the cry for linking agriculture with tourism. For many years, we have heard of government offering more incentives to farmers to assist with their production levels, efficiency, and yield. Today’s fest and the launching of Mango Fest to follow shortly are testimony to the Ministry of Agriculture’s engaging and doing all in its power to empower farmers and fisher folks in these critical areas.”
Governor General Dame Louise Lake-Tack said she was delighted to be the patron of the Mango Fest launch, not only because she loves mangoes, but because in doing so she is promoting the national fruits.
She noted that the Antiguan pineapple is such a unique fruit that even the Queen of England has a special love for it, and will be having them each year.
Other public activities scheduled for 2012 are:
Staycation (Tourism), May 19 and 20
Mango/Pineapple Culinary Competition, June 16 and 17
