Nail technician
has been the proprietor of Diana’s Nail Salon for over a decade. It’s not by chance that she ended up in this business, as “creativity and vibrant colours” have been in her mouth, so to speak, from an early age.
When I visited her shop, she was working on a client who was getting her “nails on,” as young people would say, to match her Blue House outfit for the following day.
As Clyne explains, her clients are mixed - from the youthful to middle aged and mature. All come to get their nails done in their favourite colours and designs.
Speaking about colours – the array has changed drastically from several years ago. The yellows, blues, greens, blacks, oranges etc are telling the milder colours to stand aside, even just for a season.
The designs that you see on people’s nail these days are quite attractive, to say the least, from squares, to roses, chequered designs, flags, rainbows, waves, shimmers and much more.
“Before I opened my business, I’ve always had an interest in designs and colours. I used to love mixing a lot of colours and I loved art in school. Anything to do with colours and decorative designs, that’s up my street," said Clyne.
“Back in 1998 when I got into this career, I started to work on my friends and neighbours doing their nails on Lionel Hurst Street, then I started to get references from them. I then placed ads in the papers and on Gem Radio and the business started to grow from there on," she added.
She will be operating full-time from Herbert’s Estate from May, but until then, she is on Charlesworth Ross Street in Ovals.
The services she offers vary to include airbrushing, hand design, under nail design, sculpting, and permanent pink and white French tips.
The young and upcoming nail tech also offers nail classes.
Clyne said her days at the nail shop are usually long. She provides services for 20 plus clients daily and Mondays - Thursdays are long days ending at midnight. The other days are shorter, with the latest ending at 8 pm.
She said the busy season runs from February – July and from October – December. The amount of time this nail process takes varies depending on what a customer wants done. However, most of the procedures take half an hour to 45 minutes.
The most popular requests? “It’s mostly French tips, full sets, pedicure and eyelashes - I also do that as well," she said. "It’s not business as usual when a woman is dressed up these days. Well-done nails are now a part of the package.”
