Hair has been a big topic for the past few months, with the premiere of Chris Rock’s documentary and Dr Althea Prince’s book. We mainly discuss good and bad hair, but what about hairstyles?

The first time I noticed this side shave trend was on the singer Cassie. I thought she looked rather silly with one side of her head shaved and the other with a long shoulder-sweeping mane. Given her not-so-popular status, I highly doubted that it would catch on.

After all, this style had been rocked through the 80’s and 90’s by celebrities such as T-boz and Kelis who claimed it as their personal style. But like everything in fashion, you just need the right person to rock the look that will influence the masses. This time it was the trendsetter Rihanna. Once she loped off one side of her hair, Jane Public ran to their hairdressers demanding the clippers.

I’ve been wondering to myself when this fad has ended, how long it will take to re-grow the side of your hair. Obviously it won’t be able to catch up with the other half. So do you cut it all off and rock a short style, making this the next trend?

It is very interesting to see how fast we women follow a hair fad. We’ve fried and dyed, bleached, chopped and cropped, weaved and braided. I wonder if hairdressers buy a lot of celebrity magazines perusing for the next possible requested style.
