DBC Fashion Inc is stepping out in grand style. That’s what I said as I started interviewing Sheralyn Black-Carr and she spoke about how she got to a professional level dressing full-figured women for all occasions. She also shared her goals to strike it big in the local fashion industry.
“Being a fashion designer has always been an interest of mine," she said. "From since I was a child, I did it as a hobby. I started out with the dolly house thing, taking two pants legs, cutting them out into skirts, two shirt sleeves and making things, using paper to make my own patterns, and so on. My dad also played a big part in helping me to reach where I am today. He was the type of dad who encourages you in what he sees you were good at."
In her teens, she got better at sewing and designing, and started making things for herself to wear. Her first big step came when one of her friends was getting married on a tight budget.
“I took care of the whole thing, it was a pink and white floral wedding," Black-Carr recalled. "I did the wedding dress, the bridesmaids' dresses, the head pieces, hand pieces, decorations, the whole works, which was greatly admired by all, and that’s where it really began to open up for me in a big way.”
She added, “I would wear my designs at weddings and other occasions, and people would see it and ask me where I bought the dress, because they would like one. I also placed a special gown on display at a fashion show that was held at the Multi-Purpose Centre recently, and it made a hit. I designed gowns for balls, dresses, and suits for all occasions.”
As for her thoughts on dressing full-figured women, the designer said, "If it’s not a tent, it’s as tight as a shoe string. What I noticed is that a lot of full-figured women don’t really wear their fit. Some women believe their clothes must fit big, and some go with the notion that it should be tight to make them look sma
ller. I’m here to show the world that full-figured women love fashion. We love to look good and our perfect fit is there, we just have to find it.”
Black-Carr is hoping to stage her first fashion show soon - a white affair with a splash of colours. Aren't full-figured women advised to keep away from white and bright colours? She replied, “You can look good in any colour. Love yourself in any colour; once it’s made to fit you, it would make a splash."
She added, "During this production, we will be taking a new look at full-figured women so you can actually see that we ca
n wear colours other than blacks, blues, and browns and still look good. What I do when I make clothes is that I customize your clothes to fit your figure, accentuating your positives and downplaying your negatives. So if you are top heavy and flat at the rear, your cut would be suited for that shape, and you would look your best. Attention must be paid to that type of thing; every cut is not for everyone, even if it’s the latest fashion, it just doesn’t suit you. A jacket cut for a full-busted, top-heavy woman would not necessarily be the same cut used for a flat-chested one.”
She also wants to turn Sheralyn’s Designs into a full-scale production company. A name change is in store, as she will soon call her business DBC Fashion Inc. “Basically, this fashion show is a sort of coming out for me. I’m usually a behind-the-scenes person. I don’t like the limelight, but with these great plans I have up my sleeves, I would like the world to see and know who I am and what I do. It’s new territory for me in terms of going public, but I think I’m ready.”
