Fresh Appeal Ahead of Carnival

Garbage-at-east-bus-stationAntigua St. John’s - Although authorities are making a concerted effort to curb indiscriminate disposal of waste, the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSMWA) continues to face a challenge especially in areas where scores of people congregate daily.

Concerns have been raised about the build-up of garbage which seems to find a home on the ground in the vicinity of the East Bus Station in recent times.

One woman who uses the public bus system in the area told caribarena.com “it’s really messy and smelly, I mean all that garbage just pile up on the ground in an area like this; this cannot be right.”

Caribarena.com contacted NSWMA’s Marketing Manager and Education Officer, Avna Baronville, who said this has been a problem area for some time now. She further pointed out that the recurring unauthorised removal of these bins is what is exacerbating the problem.

“We’ve placed bins time and time again at the East Bus Station area and people just steal the bins, some people have them outside their homes openly. I mean, we don’t give bins to private homes and we’ve even received reports of some even using the receptacles filled with water to wash down cars.”

Baronville said they’ve instructed their haulers that wherever they see these bins with the solid waste tag to take them with no questions asked.

She said they will be placing three more receptacles in the vicinity of the East Bus Station in anticipation of the increased traffic expected there over the Carnival period.

“And I am appealing again to the public not to take up these bins for your personal use. Please, if anyone sees these bins anywhere they are not suppose to be,  please call us at 562-1347 so we can go and get them,” Baronville said.

Garbage is collected at the East Bus Station area and St. John’s proper twice daily, morning and afternoon, but a third collection will be added over the Carnival period.

The principal services of the National Solid Waste Management Authority relate to the storage, collection, transportation and disposal of waste.

In providing for the proper storage of waste the authority has and still provides storage containers for public utilization.

The containers are primarily metal skips and plastic bins.

These containers are principally located at strategic areas in St. John’s.

The Vendors at the East Bus Station area, like A&A Mini Mart, which is a permenant structure that is ix erected on the Government road, contributes to the daily litter. Stiff FINES is what is necessary. There are laws against litteirng but the laws are not enforced. You give relevant authority all the information with evidence of who is littering and not a damn thing is done.

Give me a break! People are stealing the Garbage receptacles and all you can do is take them up when you see them? Maybe I should start to steal the wheels off government vehicles and then all you will do is take them back if you recognize them. What about a fine for anyone caught using the bins for personal use? The problem here in Antigua is that nothing is enforced, trucks continue to carry uncovered stuff and bits fly off and litter the streets, residents litter the streets without reason and drivers toss their garbage out car windows while driving. When will we get it right? When will we act responsibly? Clearly the present order of things is not working so NSWMA needs to get serious and stop playing important and doing nothing!

How about we just start placing our trash in a bin?

If the bin isn't there, don't throw it on the ground.

I have never met a tourist that likes to tour a garbage dump......but a lot of folks here like to treat the Island as one big DUMP!

If you see something, say something.....

Antiguans need to show some pride. things will not change unless people start to feel it in their pockets when they dump illegally. I know CBH and Solid Waste have a responsibility to provide storage but if for some reason none was provided that do not give people the right to place garbage on the ground. Let start to take ownership of country.

Custom Officer, with all due respect, if each business is allowed to dispose of their trash/waste etc, then caos will happen. They can decide what day, where, how to dispose of said waste. The guidelines MUST be consistant and across the board. A recycling program must be a part of those guidelines. However, the onus is and must be on businesses and individuals to secure their waste properly, and this is where the fines MUST come in, if it is not done in accordance. As far as individuals are concerned, I think their are litter statutes on the books to address them.

The People that operate businesses on a daily basis at the East Bus Station can also take some responsiblility for the disposal of their garbage . Why is it we always have to depend on government to do everything? Obsti has a business there he can donate some drums. CBH where are your Litter Wardens. Now is a good time to collect some well need cash. Fined every business at East Bus Station. Mr. Michael don't you have the legal right to do so?

The Chinese have hundreds of empty 55 gallon oil drums thrown in the bush next to our "new" Generators. These can be used as garbage bins for the bus station. I am sure that Sir David can arrange to have them given to CBH at no charge.

How difficult will it be to place recycle receptacles around the city, develop and implement a disposal & collection policy, and fine violators? In my humble opinion, it is not rocket science that should require a whole lot of brainstorming and calculations. We have got to put an end to the indiscriminate littering that is making our beautiful island paradise an eye-sore. We already know what they say about "first impression."

#3 Skyewill » 2012-07-14 08:24

Fire the Marketing Manager and Education Officer and Hire 3 - 4 people to maintain crew the facilities. she would do better with a blower on her back and a broom and a dust bin in her hand. There is no excuse for this. I was so ashamed when I saw some tourists taking pictures of our West Bus Stations with garbage everywhere. I invited a friend to visit and the first thing they said was, " You Guys could keep the place cleaner". Less than $10,000 worth of equipment would do the job and you spend 47 Million of fences. How could any elected offical drive, woops, I mean get chaperoned around town and see this and do nothing?

Please put some local Antiguan/Barbud an/Redondan welders to work. A metal housing with a lockable cover, where only sanitation employees has the keys to open the lids. These can be lag bolted to concrete pads. They can even be designed as an Antigua Black Pineapple for aesthetical purposes. Come on peeps, this is a tourist destination. THIS IS A LIE. Marketing Manager and Education Officer, Avna Baronville! What the HELL you marketing? and who are you educating. Obvious you job is obsolete and we need to hire permanent individuals to work a full time day at EAST & WEST Bus stations. This woman already don't know how to manage any operation: First, it people are stealing government property, you call Police and have them arrested. 2nd There is more than 1 day worth of garbage so you LIE. Just like a ton of big title people in Antigua, sit under the AC all day and spin and do nothing. This is a simple issue but you knuckle heads don't know what to do oe just don't care. St. Johns, a tourists town is Filthy. Shame pam ARU **.
