Willikies Resident receives Motorized Wheelchair

Kirby-says-thanksWillikies resident, Leroy “Flasher” Kirby became the first recipient of a motorized wheelchair, from Dr. Oswald Thomas, President and Founder of The Thomas Centre for Human Development Inc., of the Bronx, New York.

The presentation of the motorized wheelchair was made by Mr. Derrick Nicholas, who is the local representative for The Thomas Centre for Human Development Inc.

Mr. Kirby lost one leg four (4) years ago which has restricted his movement rendering him dependent on others to take him from point to point in the village and beyond, as well as doing simple tasks around the house.

Speaking ahead of the presentation to Mr. Kirby, Dr. Thomas said: “we hope that by providing you with this motorized wheelchair, it will allow you to move freely and become more independent and less dependent on others.”

The Thomas Centre for Human Development Inc. was founded by Dr. Oswald Thomas 15 years ago in the Bronx, New York with the specific purpose of providing relief to the poor, distressed and under privileged and for the promotion of the public good by offering programs that lessen neighborhood tension, eliminate prejudice and discrimination.

The Thomas Centre for Human Development Inc. is also committed to combating community deterioration and the furtherance of charitable, educational and human service.

Dr. Oswald Thomas and the Board of Directors of the Thomas Centre for Human Development Inc. would like to congratulate Mr. Kirby for being the first recipient of our motorized wheelchair program that matches persons in need with a motorized wheelchair.  A second person has already been identified for assistance by the motorized wheelchair program.

Thank you, Dr. Thomas and The Thomas Centre for Human Development Inc. for presenting Mr. Kirby with his new wheelchair! I have agree with fnpsr. We have a serious problem with providing access to people with wheelchairs! Having more ramps and smooth roads are critical to persons in wheelchairs!

Congratulations to the Dr. Thomas and his organization for making the needed contribution to Mr. Kirby.

While this motorized wheelchair will allow Mr. Kirby some more independence, I must admit the conditions of the side walks in Antigua will create great maneuverability problems.

I recall two years ago a friend and I delivered a wheelchair to a disabled kid at the Amazing Gracing Home for disabled kids. The kid was so excited that we decided to take him to town to try out his new wheelchair. I was surprised that there were no ramps to access the side walks. We had to turn the chair around and pull it up on the side walk.

I wish Mr. Kirby all the luck in the world. Enjoy your chair!!
