Programme For the Elderly Seeks to Bridge Historical Gaps

King Zacari will take part in the Programme For the ElderlyAntigua st. john's - More than four hundred (400) elderly citizens in Antigua & Barbuda who are registered under the Ministry of Social Transformation Residential Assistance and Care Programme for the Elderly and Eligible (GRACE) will be part of an illustrious musical extravaganza later this month, as plans gets underway to commemorate the annual Independence Program.

Chief Welfare Aide Carlstien Quinland said the involvement of the elderly in the Independence celebration dates back to around 1991.

On October 24th 2012, from 10pm, the Multi-Purpose Cultural Centre will be enlivened with historical perspectives, folklore, culture, dance and musical experience from various artistes. “Elderly (citizens) will be attired in National Dress, as a way bringing back memories of the yesteryear, with refreshingly appropriate, high quality, relaxing entertainment,” Quinland said.

Quinland said the activity, spearheaded by the Ministry of Social Transformation and co-inciding with the National Independence Celebrations, is a calendar event that seeks to strengthen intergenerational and historical gaps.

The Chief Welfare Aide explained that the elderly will benefit significantly from the musical activity being organized for them, enjoying benefits that include “increased endurance, stronger muscles and improved balance and flexibility.

Music also encourages seniors to get moving and enjoy themselves while being physically active.”

Additionally, she said the activity is also important to the cognitive and social aspects of the body. Already slated in the entertainment lineup are:

The Sunny Dale Dancers, St. Peters Primary, Lyrics Man, King Zacari, The National Dance Theatre, The St. Joseph’s Academy Glee Club, Le Chateau d’Or, The Senior Citizens Council, The Marching Band and Calypso Joe.

Chief Welfare Aide

Several years ago when the Ministry of Social Transformation renamed the elderly program the GRACE program, a retiree was employed to manage that program and was, still is being, paid more than the Chief Welfare Officer, the person who manages the Citizens' Welfare Division, under which the GRACE program falls. Despite the program having this highly paid manager, we hardly ever hear anything from her regarding the elderly; it is always the Chief Welfare Aide. Is there still a GRACE program manager; and what is the difference between that position and the Chief Welfare Aide?
