Country Pond Issue Need More Attention

Country Pond Issue Need More AttentionIt’s a matter of time before the car washing business at Country Pond returns to normal. That’s according to the popular "Rasta," who has been plying his trade there since the 1960’s.

When Caribarena.com visited the area on Monday evening, Rasta said, "The suddin’ done gone bad already. People still nar come. Dem put one tank dey, but me have fu me own tank up this side, and still the people and dem nar come as they used to."

He suggested that just as the authorities got on the radio and waged a campaign against the use of the now condemned Pond, they can get back on the airwaves and let the public know that things have changed, and that the car washing business is still very much active.

Asked about the formation of an association, as recently announced, Rasta said, "Me na no nothing about no association. Me na a part of no association. What me think me a go do... me go get one a de pipe and them from APUA and do fu me thing. Me have me kids fu feed and me bills fu pay. A three a dem me have a go a de school right ya, so me have fu mek sure me work fu get me money. Me sure if arwe do one 'nother test, eh na so bad as Mr Michael and dem ah say.”

The car washer said someone came to the Pond last Thursday to fill two jars of water, and said he was taking them for testing.

He was also concerned that the issue has cast a shadow over the way the public views the men working at the Pond.

"Sometime when they pass, they look pan arwe like arwe a suddin nasty, how they skin up dem face and scorn arwe," he said. The whole announcement just throw cold water pan eberyting ya," he said.

Chief Health Inspector Lionel Michael had earlier indicated that the tank would be placed at the pond temporarily, and they would be going back to the car washers this week to get feedback on the way forward as far as installing APUA water pipes.

There's a major biological hazard in the center of a village that's a cruise ship destination and the capital and business centre of a so-called country and the debate is centered on freelance car washers?

SERIO USLY ????????

WHO'S IN CHARGE

First of all this problem should have been solved already. it should been know fact that it will not come back right away and it will take people time to reajust. In any case. How long does it take to solve a problem in Antigua? If we can't solve this within a week then we already took too long. This tells me that there isno real management cause this is a simply problem. The water is contaminated..d rain it, put a pump in so water can cerculate and recycle the water and use it for the landscaping in the city. Ok don't like that? Make it smaller and land scape around it and open an area where the car wash can go. Antigua get money from UN organizations for developemental project. instead of putting it in you pockets build something for the people and let them repay the treasurey, recycle the money so others can use it to do something for the next community. Simply create a community enterprise center to help people create business and allow the car washers to work there. A business incubator that build people than move to build other area and the last center grow.

stop this foolishnesss now ...

#7 George Lester Baldwin Bird » 2011-01-22 07:06

Look it's time to stop this foolishness now once & for all. I don't understand why anybody cares if these people can't wash cars there. They are operating a business (car washing). They are not paying taxes. They are not paying rent. They are not even paying for water. They block & slow down traffic on 2 main roads in town. The question should be HOW DID THEY GET AWAY WITH THIS FOR SO LONG? These fellows should be happy they got away with it for so long & do the right thing now & start a real car wash & start pay taxes like all other business people in Antigua & Barbuda are required to do. If the authorities allow them to go back business as usaul then I believe I am gonna find a spot & set up a car wash business in town as well.

Car washing again?

#6 Buzzbomb » 2011-01-22 06:12

Showing my age here when I say; I'm sounding like a broken record, but saying corrupted MP3 file just doesn't have the same ring to it.
This should be less about a St. John's car washing, than it is an urgent problem about cleaning up open sewage downtown. The technology exists to arrest this public health hazzard, but discourse seems to alway's be about car washers.

Rasta – is topical of a lot of us in Antigua – no sense of responsibility, and what is worst is that the opposition, ALP, encourages this type of behavior to cater for a few votes. That is what’s wrong with Antigua.

This clearly shows that ignorance is really the worst disease to have ever plagued mankind.

typical - no shame

#2 tenman » 2011-01-21 23:26

Its easy to attack "rasta" but what he stated is so typical. He wants the government to now promote his business: "He suggested that just as the authorities got on the radio and waged a campaign against the use of the now condemned Pond, they can get back on the airwaves and let the public know that things have changed, and that the car washing business is still very much active" . They were willing to put themselves and the public at risk but its none of their faults to them they bare no responsibility for the fall out. I always find it interesting that many Antiguans are repeatedly willing to vote for the same candidate but are quick to divorce themselves from actions taken by the said candidate. I get the feeling sometimes that we are adults who act like irresponsible children. Its strange because we then demand to be treated as adults. However we see no shame in demanding that government feed our children.
