MP Calls for Sewage Solution

MP BenjaminMP for St John’s City South Steadroy Benjamin wants the government to rectify the situation at Country Pond, and ensure future projects do not involve dumping sewage into the downtown water cachement.

Benjamin, speaking in Parliament Monday, said the car washers affected by the decision to restrict use of the heavily contaminated water have agreed to form the the St John’s City South Car Washers Cooperative. Membership will be only be open to genuine car washers, he said, not fly-by-night operators.

APUA will be asked to install three standpipes around the pond, and every week, a treasurer will collect money from the men to pay for the service.

Padlocks will be installed on the taps, and the police will be asked to provide increased surveillance in the area to discourage vandals. Benjamin said he would ask the government to consider a subsidy, but if this cannot be implemented, the men would have to bear the cost.

“People rely on that pond for a living," he said. "There is one fellow by the name of 'Rasta' who has been there since 1966. All of his children were schooled from that pond. The workers started there when there weren’t all these buildings around. ... Right now the gates are locked, the water cannot be used, and a tank is placed there.”

Benjamin noted that "Rasta" was a strong supporter of the PM.

He recommended that the pond be pumped dry right away, and the water dumped into the sea, which cleans itself.

The MP also appealed to the authorities to ensure that any new structure built, such as the car park, have the necessary facilities to channel waste in the proper manner.

Baptiste Press Release states that he is planning to source a packege sewer plant for Mc Kennons Pond.
rather reporting to the tax payers on the mystery of the fish kills Baptiste is planning to buy a sewer treatment plant for his rich neighbours. Why are poor Antigua providing a treatment plant for private business that surround Mckennons Pond? I agree that the situation that be be the source of the fish kill has to be addressed.
it appears that the rich private businesses surrounding McKennons Pond has something in commons with Car Washers pay no taxes but demand services from the Government at no cost to them, so that they may maintain their lives style. Where is the public out cry to this crazyness?

CountryMan, I agree with you. Your plan is a well toughtout plan and wilh some refinement, it could work. I would call your plan a real world experience plan. Way to go!!

It still amazes me that the powers to be do not learn from reading these blogs. It would not take anything away for them to introduce some of the ideas proferred here on Caribarena, as long as they gave proper credit. We are all here to help and we have a lot more varied experience than the present leaders all put together!

Why reinvent the wheel when you do not have to?

Your passion for this issue is appreciated and to be applauded. May I remind that you do not catch Bees with vinegar but with Honey. Marketing and selling of ideas require building good business relationships.
Build support with the Public, The Car Washers and the Politicians will fall in Line. Do not anger the Politicos, They are like hornets and will strike without mercy. Be Charitable. Focus on your Goal which is to have your compatriot design/build and operate a package sewage plant. Let us not speak damagingly of or criticize in a derogatory manner. Our aim is to bring about change. In 1995, I found a local lady in Codrington Barbuda who had a small business and had bought a small package sewage plant to manage the waste from the business. Some of our people are forward thinking. Find that in Antigua? Again,Thanks for your passionate suggestions. With Respect. Keep Hope Alive. Keep The Faith

If the pond is contaminated with feces, I do see it is reasonable to pump the water into the sea. Organism, fish etcetera can and will eat such FOODS. I say it is okay, if only feces is the contaminant, the water should be taken about 2 miles out and dumped.

doesn' t this always happen thou when there is heaven rain, it pours out to the sea?

Very good proposal. Unfortunately, I do believe it will be falling on deaf ears as these guys do not seem to be willing to embrace change/new technologies.

St John’s City South Car Washers Cooperative.

#6 Native Son » 2011-01-11 03:34

Congrats on forming the Cooperative! Next step: Relocating the Business from this Area. Previously I proposed three potential Business Strategies, Structures and Systems which would accomodate this. The Coop moves this forward. Relocation is a necessary step to transform this Service and to assist with the Intended Beautification Program. That the Harbour will provide some assistance in disinfecting and breaking down the sanitary sewer is without question. Without knowing the sanitary loads being discharged into the Harbour, it is a Presumptous Sin of the MP to propose this solution. The tidal flows from the Harbour are minimal and would not alleviate the pollution resulting from the discharge into the Harbour. To effectively and efficiently discharge sewer into the coastal waters, the outflow lines points of discharge would need to be located several miles out to sea and away from reefs and spawning areas. Tourism is our Primary Economic Engine. Again to the Car Washers, Keep Hope Alive. Keep The Faith.

Cutie Benjamin Plan @ My Plan

#5 CountryMan » 2011-01-11 03:28

As stated in this article The MP Benjamin plan is to dump the sewer water from Country Pond in to St Johns Harbour. The idoits are running the reservation.
Here is a plan:
1) Investigate the sources of the sewage;:
2) Once the volume of sewage is determined, source a package sewage plant. Their is a licensed Mechanical Engineer working for the NYC Department of Environmental Protection who happens to be an expert in package systems. he comes from Grays farm and lives in the Bronx..
3) Procure the Pant on a Design/Build Operate and Transfer with the sewage fees used to amortize the cost of the plant .
4) Sell the gray water to farmers and other industrial uses.
Unfortunately this is to rational a plan , to be considered on a Reservation that is still stuck in its byzantine ways. it would cost the tax payers not a penny. In fact it would generate an income. further it would srve as a prototype for the creation of Sewer districts across the country by making one small step towards saving our environment.

A poor reflection of who we are and those who lead us

#3 CountryMan » 2011-01-11 00:56

Like it or not its an eye sore. it has been the place of illegal drug transaction. Solve the problem once and for all.
What craziness about draining a feces laden body of water into the bay? Are these the idiots elected to public office? The natural and the built environment are the only resources you have, except for the hope and dreams of the young and future generations. This guy should be run out of town with this utterly ridiculous idea.
Of course keeping your ego busting big gas guzzling SUVs looking shinny and new is more important than the environment.. A sad reflection of who we really are as a people.

One does not have to be a rocket scientist to see the near term and long term solutions to this problem that came about because of government failure and neglect. The actions taken only;y further escapade the problem.
APUA is now providing services to a group of people who pays no taxes There is the cost of putting the service in place as well as the cost of maintaining the service. Some individual is going to collect cash on behalf of APUA each week for water usage. Give me a break. Stay tuned for who don't pay. the money disappearing. Another ridiculous response to an issue that could be easily remedied.

Another Idiot weights in

#1 CountryMan » 2011-01-11 00:42

Just another buffoon expounding on something he has no clue about. here was an opportunity as others have previously suggested whereby these Car Washers could be upgraded from ad hock to small businesses who pay taxes, create jobs and grow their services. With Petrol station scattered across the country it was for the Government to facilitate partnerships whereby the Car Washers could conduct their business from the petrol stations, who in most cases has what is necessary to function: access and proximity to high traffic routes; water and electric power, proper drainage etc etc.
