Country Pond Unfit for Human Use

Unfit for Human UseThe results of water testing at Country Pond have finally been revealed; it is extremely unfit for human use. Chief Health Inspector Lionel Michael called a meeting Thursday with the car washers who use the Pond, however this was postponed due to inclement weather.

In sharing highlights of the lab report, Michael revealed that over 20 samples were taken from August to November to determine the pollution load. Microbiological indicators revealed that car washers, members of the public, and car owners are in danger of contracting diseases due to the high level of pollution which the Pond now hosts from waste generated mainly from the government office complex and the East Bus Station.

"The harmful content of the water includes bacteria, chemicals such as ammonia, nitrate, nitrogen and Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD). We found the bacterial content to be very high, from a low of 400 to 55,000. This is very dangerous if it come into contact with humans," he said.

Michael hopes the car washers will stop using the water immediately for any human-related purpose, even if it means that people stop taking their cars there to be washed.

Asked about the similar use of other ponds in areas like Cedar Grove, Big Creek, and Sea View Farm, Michael explained, "I'm not saying they may not be polluted, but it's totally different. With the case of the Country Pond, the bacterial count is 55,000 to 100 ml of water, so you can imagine the risk; there is no continuous discharge of human waste going into these ponds, as is the case with Country Pond.

There is no standard for this type of water for humans, like say the sea/beach, which has a bacterial load of 26 or lower to every 100 ml of water; this is very low. On other words, nobody should use the Country Pond for any purpose - swimming, diving, playing - the most you could do is to row a boat across the water. It's raw water which is contained to prevent flooding in the city. That's the purpose for which the facility was mainly built."

Michael also commented on questions from some quarters about why there was no alarm about the Pond before, since it has been in use for decades.

He replied, "Micro organisms change into more toxic strains as time goes by, and this thought about how long Country Pond is in use without a problem should not even be advocated. The fact is the water is polluted, and poses a health risk, and that's the issue. The high bacterial load and the type of bacteria found in the samples indicate that fecal waste is entering the Pond."

He however dismissed concerns that waste from the Mount St John's Medical Centre is also finding its way down into the Pond .

"The way how the sewage plant is located on the compound makes it impossible for the waste to enter the Country Pond. It would mainly go to the gutter southwest of the hospital," he said.

Michael said his department is aware of the economic impact this lab report will have on the car washers, and discussions have started with APUA to see what can be done.

Suggestions were made to install pipes or tanks nearby. He said the Pond water, in its open state, cannot be treated, but would have to be placed in a tank, then treated and filtered.

Michael said he is looking forward to continuing discussions with everyone involved to find a quick solution. Meanwhile, he strongly advised the public to stay away from the Country Pond water.

Eric and Tobi I hope that child that touches one of those cars and falls ills will not be related to you. Yes I am all for free choice but you do not have the right to make decisions that will cause others harm. Government needs to do the job we pay them to do now, protect the public.

shut down usage of the pond

#18 joe joe » 2011-01-01 01:35

The usage of water from the pond for washing and any other purpose is of public concern as it is now known that the pond is extremely contaminated. Therefore the government has the right to shut down access to the pond now!! Otherwise we have a big public health concern on our hands which we will have to fund

Tenman, YOU are missing Eric's point

#17 Tobi » 2011-01-01 01:17

Eric makes a most valid point. (You too Tenman make a good point). But at what point do we lose freedom of choice to act. Do we want a Communist state to control all things good for us? At some point we must take responsibilitie s for our lives. We are slowly becoming useless to our selves and relying on government for everything. Perhaps it provides us someone to blame for our own personal failures and poor choices.

fnpsr - prioties are out of wack

#16 tenman » 2011-01-01 01:08

fnpsr - the central sewage system you mentioned I have heard MP Baptist state they are thinking of having this exclusively controlled and funded by a private entity because government lacks funds. Keep in mind we are not talking a BOOT arrangement, this will be exclusively private sector. That entity will charge businesses that utilize its system. My issue with this notion is that it does not seem mandatory. I also do not see how government finds its more important to provide things like school meals and uniforms yet something as important as a proper sewage system is pushed to the private sector.

Happy new year to everyone. Eric you are missing the point. It is not only the persons who wash their cars there whose health is at stake but also innocent persons. What happens to the child or any innonent person who makes the mistake of touching those vehicles after they have been washed at country pond. Do you not think that they too can be at risk. This is a health issue that can affect us all government needs to prevent them from using that pond.

Morris – Don’t we as individuals have any responsibility for our own health – Government gives us the information so that we can make responsible decisions concerning our well been. Let’s take responsibility Government cannot do everything for us.

Because the overall health and safety of the citizens is the government's responsibility. If the government declares it off limits then those who are currently using it will think twice or else face the consequences of breaking the law. I will say that ignorance is truly the worst disease known to man, it has killed more people than all other known diseases combined.

This is just evidence that a central sewer system is urgently needed!

Tenman – I am disappointed with your blog on this matter – as you correctly said the initial report told the world in general and the car washers in particular that the water in the Country Pond was contaminated – What did they do, what did they say? They ignored the warning – a warning giving with concern and with love that you claim is missing. –These are not children we are talking about – these are adults. Why would a government have to hold their hands and lead them away? Do we really need that much government in our lives?

where is it coming from?

#9 Dig It » 2010-12-31 12:02

If Michael is so concerned about the car washers, why didn't he run test on them (volunteer ones) to see if they have contacted diseases? If he said that the Pond's is polluted water with fecal waste, where is it coming from? He said it's not coming from the Mount St John's Medical Centre! It must be coming from somewhere! Night soil workers didn't put it there! And, I am sure the public is not dumbing fecal waste in it (I hope not-that's a big HOPE)!

The health department gave them the go ahead to continue using the water so they did. However, a right thinking person would stop when especially caution of this kind is given, but there are those in society that believe they cannot be harmed and it is the gov't to protect these ones.

Tobi, you are so correct. I passed there about 1:30 this afternoon and the usual throng of cars and washers are there. It behoves me that in the face of scientific evidence, the people who ply their trade there and people who utilize their services still take vehicles to be washed. Which person in their right mind would want their vehicle to be washed in water that contains sewerage? When you enter that vehicle you are forced to touch the handles... then, while driving, you may have the urge to eat something.... and you touch that food.... it goes into your stomach (and may the Lord help you).

There is indeed an economic impact that putting an end to car washing at the Pond will have. However, the potential health damage that can be unleashed on this nation definitely outweighs any negative economic impact. I say, REAL action needs to be taken now. A definitive embargo MUST be put on ALL activity presently taking place at Country Pond. Anything less would be uncivilized.

He who don't hear will feel

#5 Tobi » 2010-12-31 03:57

We really have become a nation of whiners and complainers. Damned if you do and same if you don't. The government gave its early warning about the place some months ago and the car washers etc. shouted and continued to use Country Pond. Imagine if you got word that a restaurant was making people sick; would you still go there? Then the government has now given its final scientific results that the place is dangerous to anyone's health. The washers and users are still there today after being notified that the place is unfit for humans. Looks like they will have to learn the hard way.

Why do people still take their vehicles there?

What about this great fountain that was put in yrs ago, where country pond will be an attraction in St. John's? Was Country Pond infected back then? So the money on the fountain and lights were wasted? These politicians are really a bunch of jokers

Was Country Pond really intended to be a car wash anyway?

#3 W.T.F. » 2010-12-30 22:51

At least now we have the facts and the testing has confirmed the pond is a toxic bath of raw water. Our focus should now be on a forward plan of action designed at solving the problem and not looking back at the delay for the results.

Based on these results, instead of "hoping" that the car washers stop using the pond, let's enforce a rule of order and condemn the place. Sometimes enforcement is needed to help protect those who seem unable or unwilling to protect themselves.

Although I feel for the car washers and that it will effect their profession, but I'm more concerned about the possible harm they are going to do to themselves, and the elevated health care costs we are all going to be burdened with when they get sick.

Condemn the place, clean it up, and perhaps find a more suitable proposition for the site than an unfiltered and untreated rogue car wash facility.

lets see

#2 tenman » 2010-12-30 22:06

We talk for months about there being a problem. The initial tests done in about August reveal there are health concerns. Now 4 months later we hear the final tests reveal the initial conclusions are correct. In the meantime persons continue to expose themselves to the danger. Someone must really not love the people of this country. Why continue to use something that may be harmful when there are alternatives? There is a lazy thinking that pervades this society that will eventually result in great harm.

The problem I have with this report is that when the first report came out in august that the pond was extremely polluted everyone should have been suspended from using the pond until the test were completed. Now so many person could be affected greatly between Aug n now. This was mentioned to Mr Michael at the time but he said he could not do it because he has to carry out further test. Nonsense.
